Kennedy Center Lands Historic 2026 World Cup Draw in Stunning Venue Choice

For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, three countries are joining forces to host the tournament, with the draw for next summer's competition approaching fast.

This represents an extraordinary World Cup for numerous reasons, featuring 48 participating nations in what will be the most expansive version of the tournament since it began in 1930. Most of the competing teams will be determined before the draw occurs, though the complete roster won't be finalized until March.

The United States, Canada and Mexico are collaborating as co-hosts for the tournament, though most matches will occur in the U.S., including the draw ceremony. In August, President Donald Trump announced that the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., rather than Las Vegas as widely speculated, will serve as the venue for the 2026 World Cup draw.

Here's an overview of the draw process and the reasoning behind selecting the Kennedy Center as the host location.

When is the 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw?

The 2026 World Cup draw is set for Friday, December 5 at 12 p.m. ET.

FIFA originally considered dividing the 48 teams into 16 three-team groups, but abandoned this concept following the Qatar tournament. The concurrent final-day group matches created such compelling drama that FIFA chose to preserve this format by maintaining larger group sizes.

Therefore, when the draw occurs in the nation's capital, 12 four-team groups will be established. There has been speculation about President Trump personally conducting the draw, though Trump stated this decision rests with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

"He's the boss," Trump remarked when questioned about his potential participation on December 5.

The Kennedy Center, inaugurated in 1971 as a living tribute to America's 35th President, John F. Kennedy, is a performing arts venue situated along the Potomac River.

The concept of a National Cultural Center originated during Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration, with John and Jackie Kennedy spearheading a $30 million fundraising effort for the facility's construction.

Since opening, the Kennedy Center has become the premier destination for various performing arts in America, encompassing opera, classical music and dance.

Nevertheless, if President Trump achieves his objectives, the Kennedy Center name may not endure much longer, as the 79-year-old is effectively assuming control of the performing arts venue. This year, he dismissed Democratic board appointees and installed supporters, clearing the path for his appointment as the Center's Chairman.

"The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest, most complex set of events in sports history. And the Kennedy Center will give it a phenomenal kickoff," he stated.
