Kepa Arrizabalaga Bids Emotional Farewell to Chelsea After Sealing Arsenal Switch
Kepa Arrizabalaga has written a heartfelt goodbye message to Chelsea following his transfer across London to Arsenal.
After joining Chelsea in the summer of 2018 for a goalkeeper-record fee of £71.6 million ($98.2 million)—a record that remains unbroken—Kepa faced difficulties during his time at Stamford Bridge. The Spanish keeper featured in 163 matches for the Blues, recording 59 clean sheets, before eventually losing his position as first-choice goalkeeper.
The 2023–24 campaign saw him loaned to Real Madrid to provide backup for the injured Thibaut Courtois, ironically the same player he had replaced at Chelsea previously. Last season, he was sent on loan to Bournemouth, where his performances impressed and attracted Arsenal's attention as they sought backup for their Spanish number one, David Raya.
An agreement has been reached, with reports suggesting Arsenal secured his services for a modest £5 million ($6.9 million).
"I feel incredibly happy to be here, truly excited and eager for what lies ahead," expressed Kepa, who will wear the number 13 jersey at Arsenal.
"The ambition displayed by this club, when speaking with Mikel [Arteta] and Inaki [Cana], their passion for winning is evident... I believe we're very close to achieving success and, hopefully, together we can make it happen."
Just before his transfer became official, Kepa posted a farewell message to Chelsea on social media.
"Following seven remarkable years, it's time to conclude a truly meaningful chapter of my journey," he posted. "Chelsea became my sanctuary, my family, and where I developed as both a player and an individual.
"I came with aspirations and depart with cherished memories: trophies including the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup... but most importantly, experiences shared with amazing individuals both on and off the field.
"My gratitude goes to the managers, staff, fellow players, and especially to you, the supporters. Representing this club has been both an honor and a privilege.
"A fresh chapter now awaits, and I approach it with the same dedication and enthusiasm as ever. I depart with immense appreciation in my heart."
