Kevin De Bruyne Reveals Why He Rejected MLS Move and Pledges Future to Man City

Kevin De Bruyne declared that he will remain a "Man City player for life" as he detailed the reasoning behind his decision to move to Napoli during the summer transfer window.
In an unexpected turn of events that caught many off guard, including De Bruyne himself, the Belgian maestro was not presented with a contract extension by Manchester City before his agreement concluded in June. At 34 years old, the frequently injured midfielder had passed his prime years, yet De Bruyne continued to deliver some of the Premier League's most outstanding statistics whenever he took to the field.
Looking at players who featured in more than 10 league fixtures during the 2024–25 season, De Bruyne achieved the highest rate for expected assists and opportunities created. Only Arsenal skipper Martin Ødegaard managed more open-play deliveries into the box than the experienced playmaker during that period.
This exceptional performance attracted numerous clubs hoping to secure De Bruyne's signature as a free agent this summer. Napoli emerged victorious in the pursuit, despite interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, multiple MLS teams, and even Premier League competitors like Liverpool.
Inter Miami possessed exclusive Discovery Rights for De Bruyne, while San Diego and Chicago Fire were reportedly showing significant interest. In the end, the opportunity to continue competing in one of Europe's elite leagues—particularly with Italy's reigning champions—became irresistible.

"Having the complete vision presented to me and realizing I could compete in Italy while maintaining elite-level football was thrilling," De Bruyne shared with reporters during his inaugural Napoli media appearance.
"I spent such an extended period in the Premier League, and ultimately I chose to leave England. I accomplished what I set out to achieve, and fundamentally I remain a Man City player for life. Given how things concluded for me there, I believed it was the right moment to seek a fresh challenge."
"Napoli are already title holders, but they continue strengthening their roster," De Bruyne continued. "I hope to contribute to the team's development while also gaining knowledge from them—a different playing style, a new tournament."
The Belgium star will find at least one recognizable presence in the locker room. "Romelu [Lukaku] was delighted [about the transfer]," De Bruyne smiled. "I discussed it with him during national team duty, and he encouraged me to join. Romelu and I have known each other since age 13, so we share a close bond. During our Chelsea days, we shared accommodation for several months.
"Having someone familiar makes the transition smoother since he can assist with translation and provide guidance, given his familiarity with the manager and squad."
