Key Stars Missing as Mexico Unveils Weakened Squad for October 2025 Friendlies

Javier Aguirre announced the 25-player squad that will journey to the United States to represent Mexico in October's exhibition matches against Colombia and Ecuador.

A wave of injuries has impacted Mexico's international players throughout the past month, forcing Aguirre to select peripheral players who weren't included in El Tri's recent lineups.

Saudi Pro League standout Luis Quiñones will receive another opportunity as he attempts to regain his peak performance after disappointing displays with El Tri in his latest outings. Hirving Lozano continues his stellar form with San Diego FC and has secured his second consecutive national team selection.

Additionally, Luis Romo, Kevin Álvarez and Carlos Acevedo will receive chances following extended periods away from the squad.

The most unexpected selection might be Alexis Gutíerrez. The Club América midfielder has featured in only three matches since Aug. 9, yet Aguirre will grant him his second international call-up and his first since Nov. 2024.

Injuries have severely affected Aguirre's October squad selection. Mexico will confront Colombia and Ecuador without both their captain and top scorer from the previous year.

Edson Álvarez sustained a hamstring problem during Mexico's September encounter with Japan and only made his comeback this past weekend. Raúl Jiménez developed a hip complaint while playing for Fulham and after sitting out the Cottagers' match against Bournemouth, he hasn't recovered sufficiently to join El Tri.

Moreover, Rodrigo Huescas ruptured his ACL during midweek action and will be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign in what represents a crushing setback for Aguirre's team.

Roberto Alvarado sustained an ankle problem and has been absent for Chivas' last four Liga MX fixtures, joining the growing list of injured Mexico internationals.

With several regular contributors unavailable due to fitness concerns, Aguirre will expect squad players to rise to the occasion and demonstrate their worthiness for inclusion in Mexico's World Cup selection next summer.
