Jürgen Klopp has acknowledged it was "challenging" handling superstar winger Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, but maintains they "never lost respect for each other" despite occasional minor clashes.
Salah is the player Klopp deployed most frequently throughout his managerial career, fielding the Egyptian on 349 occasions and being handsomely rewarded with 211 goals and 94 assists across those appearances. Nevertheless, tensions still existed within their relationship.
Klopp has openly admitted to having disputes with Liverpool's iconic No. 11, one notable instance unfolding shortly before the German's departure from Anfield. In April 2024, a heated touchline exchange between the two at West Ham United grabbed headlines, with Salah visibly frustrated at being brought on so late in the game.
Reflecting on his experience coaching Salah following the recent confirmation of the forward's exit at the end of this season, Klopp shared: "Great teammate, great guy—not great company when he's not scoring!

"We call him selfish, yet we cheer when he scores after beating five defenders. We both know we had these disagreements—nothing major. Like the one at West Ham; both of us, five seconds later, would have thought: 'No, don't do that in public, come on, rewind.' By the next morning it was already forgotten, but it plays out in front of everyone.
"We never lost respect for each other, and that's what I truly value. He wasn't happy with me for a moment when I substituted him at the 87th minute, and you think: 'Why?' The time with him and Sadio [Mané] together—they were a challenge, naturally. Special players are always a challenge. Name me one who isn't?"
'Irreplaceable' Salah Will Be Sorely Missed

Liverpool face the daunting challenge of finding a successor to their all-time Premier League and Champions League leading scorer at the end of the season, though Klopp believes the Reds will struggle to find a true replacement for the winger.
"This particular type of player is irreplaceable," said the 58-year-old. "I'm not even sure another one exists out there. There are others playing on that flank with different strengths and attributes, but the numbers Mo produces—they are unmatched from that position.
"The statistics for a winger are extraordinary. For a striker, they are virtually unparalleled. So if it's impossible, why would you even try?"
Liverpool will nonetheless need to make some effort to replace their attacking cornerstone after nine years of outstanding service, though a substantial fee may be required to secure a worthy successor to Salah's legendary role.
Bayern Munich's Michael Olise is regarded as one of the club's most ambitious targets, though a summer move appears highly unlikely, while RB Leipzig rising star Yan Diomande is also on the club's shortlist following a remarkable campaign.
Regardless of which summer arrival steps into Salah's shoes, they face a near-impossible task in attempting to match his remarkable output.
