Knee Injury Threatens To Sideline Mbappe For High-Stakes El Clasico Showdown Against Barcelona

Real Madrid are waiting on scan results for Kylian Mbappé's left knee to assess the extent of the injury he sustained while netting for France against Türkiye on Friday, with the timing dangerously close to the season's first Clásico against Barcelona on Oct. 25.

Mbappé appeared to injure himself during his shooting motion as he gave France the lead in the 54th minute. He showed visible signs of pain immediately, and new head coach Zinedine Zidane later described it as a knee "hyperextension." The French football federation's official statement announcing Mbappé's departure from the squad confirmed the issue involves a tendon.

Had the injury been to Mbappé's right knee, there would likely be far less cause for alarm. However, his left knee has already been a source of concern.

Following the discovery of a partial ligament tear in December, he was initially ruled out of the Spanish Super Cup semifinal in January, only featuring from the bench in the final defeat to Barcelona. Mbappé reclaimed his starting spot after that, but went on to miss three La Liga games—including El
Clásico—in March due to recurring knee issues, along with Champions League matches against Manchester City and Benfica.

"We're not going to take any risks," Zidane stated. At the very least, Mbappé will sit out all of France's remaining three UEFA Nations League fixtures during this international break. Les Bleus face Belgium twice, with a home match against Italy sandwiched in between over the coming nine days.

What Is a Hyperextended Knee?

Per the Cleveland Clinic, "Hyperextended knees are common injuries for athletes. Mild hyperextensions won't require surgery." However … "don't play through pain or ignore symptoms. This can make a mild injury worse and lead to more severe injuries like torn ligaments."

The injury occurs when the knee joint is forced beyond its normal range of motion.

Exercising caution with Mbappé appears to be the prudent approach, as "severe" hyperextensions are cited as "common causes" of injuries such as torn ACLs or MCLs. Initial symptoms typically include pain and swelling, with the latter sometimes complicating the scanning process. Surgery isn't always necessary, but damage to ligaments or tendons may require medical intervention.

The recovery timeline hinges entirely on the severity of the injury, which is why it is crucial for Real Madrid's medical staff to examine the knee and evaluate the situation.

According to WebMD, "mild sprains" resulting from a hyperextension will "often feel better after two weeks of normal treatment measures, such as rest." That kind of timeline would put Mbappé's availability in doubt for Real Madrid's La Liga clash with Villarreal on Oct. 10, and potentially their Champions League tie against Roma four days later given the training time he will have missed.

Anything beyond a mild injury will demand a lengthier rehabilitation period. El Clásico is still 29 days away.
