Kobbie Mainoo Shines in England Debut Start Against Japan

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was handed a starting role in England's disappointing 1–0 loss to Japan on Thursday night, and he delivered a performance that was difficult to assess clearly.

The 20-year-old's previous start for the Three Lions dated back to September 2024, after which he endured a lengthy spell away from the national setup, largely due to his diminished role at Old Trafford under then-manager Ruben Amorim.

Revitalized under Michael Carrick, Mainoo has returned to the England fold. The midfielder entered only as a substitute in the team's 1–1 stalemate with Uruguay, but earned a spot in Thomas Tuchel's starting lineup against Japan.

The match itself was deeply disappointing for the 2024 Euro runners-up, and even Mainoo's finest contributions likely wouldn't have been enough to secure a result for the home side at Wembley Stadium. It didn't help, however, that the Man Utd star had some shaky moments.

A Bright Start Marred by Palmer's Mistakes

Mainoo made a promising start on Tuesday evening, receiving the ball frequently as England found their footing in the match. The 20-year-old demonstrated his nimble footwork in congested areas, twisting away from opponents in midfield to calmly and efficiently distribute the ball to his teammates in white.

Predictably, Mainoo operated around the halfway line for much of the early exchanges, ideally placed to recycle possession, spark an attack, or drop back to defend on the counter. The midfielder did all three within the opening 10 minutes at Wembley, but it was his perfectly weighted pass to release Palmer—whose heavy first touch wasted the opportunity—that stood out in his early contributions.

He was let down again by the Chelsea man in the 23rd minute when Palmer was dispossessed in midfield by Kaoru Mitoma. Mainoo chased after the rapid Japanese winger and threw in a last-ditch challenge inside his own penalty area, attempting but ultimately failing to stop what turned out to be a goal for the visitors.

Now a goal down, England placed far greater emphasis on pushing forward with attacking intent. Mainoo, who had controlled the rhythm of the game from the first whistle, began advancing up the pitch, searching for the right pass to create a scoring opportunity or at least contribute to the buildup.

However, there was a distinct lack of creativity from the players ahead of the Man Utd midfielder. Without Harry Kane spearheading the attack, Tuchel's forward line frequently loitered around the box without any real threat of breaking through. As a result, Mainoo's passes had minimal impact in the final third despite their precision.

The England international misplaced only two passes in the opening 45 minutes, but one careless attempt nearly handed Japan a second goal. Mainoo played a sloppy ball forward that was easily cut out by Kaishū Sano, who then surged down the pitch and threaded a superb through ball to Ayase Ueda.

Mainoo watched anxiously as the striker's effort rattled the crossbar, sparing him the humiliation of gifting the visitors a goal just before the break.

Japan were the superior side after the interval, pressing the Three Lions hard in London. The hosts were under pressure in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, and Mainoo was no different.

The youngster was caught watching the ball as a well-timed through pass found Junya Ito in behind down the right side. Mainoo was slow to recover, leaving the attacking midfielder free to advance and look for Ueda in the center of the box. His cross was comfortably gathered by Jordan Pickford after Mainoo got the faintest of touches on the ball, just about making amends for his earlier lapse.

Mainoo avoided further errors in his own half for the remainder of the match, and even made up for earlier mistakes with several recoveries and interceptions before being substituted in the 71st minute.

The midfielder can take pride in an impressive passing display, though he will have wanted to iron out a few lapses, both in and out of possession.
