Kyle Walker Opens Up About "Selfish" Decision That Led to Shocking Man City Departure

Kyle Walker has acknowledged that departing Manchester City during the middle of the 2024–25 season to join AC Milan on a temporary deal was a mistake.

Following his role as City's primary right-back at the season's start, Walker found himself excluded from Pep Guardiola's starting eleven in December as the manager implemented sweeping changes to combat an unexpected downturn that resulted in six losses and two stalemates over nine Premier League matches.

Once it became apparent that regular playing time was no longer guaranteed, Walker decided to pursue a departure from the underperforming Citizens. A half-season loan arrangement with AC Milan was swiftly arranged, followed by a permanent transfer to Burnley during the summer window.

Speaking with Sky Sports, Walker acknowledged that his position as City's captain should have prevented him from departing in January while the squad was experiencing difficulties.

"Was leaving for AC Milan on loan the right decision? I held the captain's armband, and you're at the forefront when circumstances aren't favorable," he pondered. "During that period of the season, was my departure justified? Reflecting on it now, most likely not.

"I ought to have remained alongside my teammates, beside my companions and those I consider family. However, for perhaps the first time in my professional journey, I acted selfishly and prioritized my own interests, wanting to continue playing regularly.

Walker: I Didn't Think I Could Turn Down Milan

"I don't view it as having negative motivations, but I was dissatisfied with sporadic appearances and occasional starts. I believed I still needed to demonstrate my ability to compete at the highest level. When an institution like AC Milan presents an opportunity, I felt I couldn't decline.

"Upon returning during the summer, I had the opportunity to contemplate my decision. However, I don't harbor regrets since I had always aspired to compete internationally and gain that experience. I'm satisfied with those six months, though I acknowledge I could have performed better."

Walker initially impressed in Milan before injuries and declining performance led to his exclusion from the first team. The Serie A club chose not to exercise their permanent transfer option valued at approximately €5 million ($6.7 million).

Burnley subsequently paid a comparable amount to secure Walker's services at Turf Moor this summer, and he has featured in every minute of the club's opening seven Premier League fixtures, including a devastating 5–1 defeat against his previous club last month.
