Kylian Mbappe Poised to Shatter a La Liga Record That Has Stood for 48 Years

Kylian Mbappe Poised to Shatter a La Liga Record That Has Stood for 48 Years

Kylian Mbappé stands just one match away from holding onto the Pichichi Trophy, the prestigious award presented to La Liga's leading scorer each season. It will serve as a personal bright spot amid the team's disappointing campaign, during which Real Madrid supporters have grown frustrated with the prolific French forward.

Mbappé heads the standings entering the final matchday of 2025–26, having netted 24 league goals. His unlikely nearest challenger for the Pichichi is Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi, sitting two behind on 22.

A hat-trick from Muriqi when Mallorca take on Real Oviedo in the 38th round on Saturday could allow the Kosovo international to leapfrog Mbappé, provided the Frenchman fails to add to his total when Real Madrid welcome Athletic Club at the same time. Should the two end level, Mbappé's superior assist count this season—currently five compared to one—would give him the edge.

What makes this interesting is that such a scenario from Muriqi isn't entirely far-fetched. Mallorca must defeat Real Oviedo, who secured the wooden spoon some weeks ago, to keep their relegation survival hopes alive. That gives Muriqi enormous motivation, while Mbappé has very little to play for.

In reality, Mbappé should have wrapped up the Pichichi Trophy well before now. Last season, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward claimed it with 31 goals while also winning the European Golden Shoe as the continent's top scorer. At one point, he appeared on course to surpass that mark, having struck 13 times in his opening 11 La Liga outings this term, and reaching 23 by his 22nd league appearance.

However, a knee problem that first emerged at the close of 2025 disrupted his rhythm, and Mbappé has managed just one La Liga goal over the past three months. It is solely his explosive first half of the campaign that has kept the Frenchman in contention for the Pichichi Trophy at all.

Mbappé's only league strike since early February arrived in April's 2–1 victory over Alavés. He has since sat out two further matches through injury, including the pivotal Clásico on May 10, and only returned to the starting eleven against Sevilla on Sunday — without finding the net.

One factor that may work in Mbappé's favor is that Muriqi's scoring rate, though somewhat more consistent throughout the season, has also dried up. The 32-year-old, whose previous best top-flight campaign yielded 17 goals for Çaykur Rizespor in Türkiye back in 2018–19, has managed just one goal in his last six outings.

With neither player in particularly sharp form, the current standings naturally favor Mbappé as the man in front.

Yet even as Mbappé appears poised to secure a second consecutive Pichichi Trophy — which would make him the first player to win it in each of his opening two La Liga seasons since Valencia's Mario Kempes in 1976–77 and 1977–78 — he has no realistic chance of retaining the European Golden Shoe.

Last season, Mbappé became the first French player to receive the continental accolade since Thierry Henry in 2004–05. His 24 goals this term are still enough to place him third overall, four points behind Erling Haaland in second. However, Harry Kane sits 12 goals clear of the field on the back of a stunning Bundesliga campaign with Bayern Munich.

The 32-year-old has bagged 36 goals in just 31 appearances and is set to claim his second Golden Shoe, having previously won it in 2023–24. The only other English recipient in the award's 48-year history was Sunderland's Kevin Phillips, who claimed it in 1999–2000.
