Kylian Mbappe Set to Inherit Legendary Real Madrid Jersey Number

Kylian Mbappé is expected to be the next player to inherit Real Madrid's prestigious No. 10 jersey when the upcoming season begins.
Upon joining Real Madrid last summer, the French striker opted for the No. 9 jersey, which had been available following Karim Benzema's exit from the club. During his inaugural season with the world's most prestigious football club, Mbappé netted 43 goals, claiming both the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Boot.
While the No. 9 jersey proved successful for Mbappé, he may receive a promotion before the 2025–26 campaign kicks off. As Luka Modrić prepares to depart the club following the FIFA Club World Cup, the No. 10 jersey will be up for grabs for the first time in nearly a decade.
According to MARCA, Real Madrid considers Mbappé the logical heir to Modrić's No. 10 jersey. The organization believes this new number will "enhance the former PSG star's leadership profile" despite his relatively brief tenure at Real Madrid.
Modern History of Real Madrid's No. 10 Shirt

Player | Years in No. 10 |
---|---|
Luka Modrić | 2017–Present |
James Rodríguez | 2014–2017 |
Mesut Özil | 2011–2014 |
Lassana Diarra | 2009–2011 |
Wesley Sneijder | 2008–2009 |
Robinho | 2005–2009 |
Luís Figo | 1999–2005 |
While Mbappé hasn't specifically requested this change, his connection to the number could influence his choice. The 26-year-old previously wore No. 10 during his time at Monaco and continues to sport it with the French national squad. During his PSG career, he primarily wore the No. 7 jersey, which currently belongs to Vinícius Júnior at Real Madrid.
Receiving one of Real Madrid's most significant jersey numbers from a club icon and former Ballon d'Or recipient would be a tremendous privilege for Mbappé. Additionally, Los Blancos view this transition as a chance to "elevate [Mbappé's] profile across all platforms".
However, any potential switch won't occur until later this summer. Modrić will continue wearing the No. 10 jersey until he officially concludes his time in the Spanish capital.
Only after that moment could Mbappé potentially become the 10th player in three decades to don this legendary jersey for Real Madrid.
