Kylian Mbappé's relentless pursuit of scoring records across every competition shows no signs of slowing, as the Real Madrid forward has now broken into the top five of the Champions League's all-time goalscoring list.
Mbappé got Madrid off to a flying start in their League Phase opener against Inter Milan, with José Mourinho securing a 2–1 victory in his first European game back as manager at the Bernabéu.
The French superstar capitalised on poor defending to find the net inside 15 minutes, before Federico Valverde doubled the lead nine minutes later. Inter mounted a comeback, but Carlos Augusto's second-half goal amounted to little more than a consolation on the evening.
Mbappé's goal brings his Champions League tally to 71, drawing him level with fellow Real Madrid icon Raúl.
The pair now share fifth place in the competition's all-time scoring rankings, though Mbappé holds a considerably better goals-per-game ratio (0.72 compared to 0.50) and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Mbappé, who will reach the milestone of 100 Champions League appearances in his next outing, remains the only player in the top five never to have won the tournament. Among the current top ten, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Harry Kane are the only others yet to claim the coveted trophy.
He requires 19 more goals to close in on fourth-placed Karim Benzema — yet another former Madrid man — while he would need to double his current total to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo at the summit of the all-time charts.
Despite Madrid's run ending at the quarterfinal stage last season, Mbappé still finished 2025–26 as the Champions League's top scorer with 15 goals — a single-season haul only ever surpassed by Ronaldo.
Further cementing his status as one of the greatest finishers the game has ever seen, the 27-year-old also claimed the World Cup's all-time scoring record this summer, eclipsing Lionel Messi with his 22nd international tournament goal.
'No Longer a Novelty'—Mbappé Hits Back at Critics
In an interview with France Football, Mbappé — widely considered a leading contender for this year's Ballon d'Or — offered a sharp response to those who have questioned his defensive output and overall work rate.
"I think it's not normal, but that's the life of someone who has been close to excellence for years. I'm no longer in the realm of novelty.
"Everyone has known for years what I can do. And I think that's where we enter the realm of human nature. It's human to always look at what someone doesn't do. When someone has been doing it for ten years, we stop looking at what they do. We know they can do it. So we always try to look at what they don't do. From that point on, it's not something I take personally."
He continued: "Everyone has their own perspective, but I believe the objective of football is to score goals — to score one more than the opposition. A player who scores goals will never be a liability for any team, because I've never seen a side win trophies without putting the ball in the net."
