LA Galaxy are reportedly on the verge of completing a deal to bring in former Mexico international Hirving "Chucky" Lozano from MLS rivals San Diego FC.
According to The Athletic, the Galaxy are closing in on an agreement with San Diego to bring the dynamic winger in on loan for the remainder of the 2026 Major League Soccer season. The 31-year-old would head to Los Angeles to bolster his new side's push to secure a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs.
Lozano would arrive at the Galaxy as a Designated Player, given that he holds the fourth-highest salary in all of MLS, with his annual wages exceeding $9 million — trailing only Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Son Heung-min. San Diego would still be required to cover a share of the Mexican's earnings.
After becoming the club's very first signing ahead of their inaugural 2025 season, Lozano fell out of favor with head coach Mickey Varas, who effectively banished him from the squad before the 2026 campaign. The winger has not played a competitive match since November 29, 2025.
LA Galaxy Willing to Take a Risk on Hirving Lozano
Despite contributing 11 goals and 11 assists in 31 appearances — a tally that helped San Diego reach the MLS Western Conference semifinals in their debut campaign — it wasn't enough for Lozano to repair his rift with Varas. Disciplinary problems have followed El Chucky throughout his career, and this latest falling-out has left his career at a complete standstill for more than eight months.
San Diego attempted to facilitate Lozano's departure as far back as the January transfer window, but the player's refusal to sacrifice his hefty salary and his reluctance to relocate outside of Southern California meant no deal could be struck.
Lozano has been seen in videos training alone, separate from his San Diego teammates, in recent months. His decision to essentially put his career on hold ultimately cost him a place in Mexico's squad for the 2026 World Cup, despite having re-established himself as a regular for El Tri toward the end of 2025.
Yet LA Galaxy appear undeterred by Lozano's off-field baggage and his extended absence from competitive football. Having claimed the 2024 MLS Cup, Los Angeles failed to reach the playoffs at all in 2025, finishing second from bottom in the Western Conference regular season table.
Greg Vanney's squad currently occupies 12th place, sitting just two points outside the playoff positions in the 2026 standings. However, with only one victory from their last seven outings, the Galaxy appear eager to bring in a player who can help them get back on track and avoid missing the postseason for a second consecutive year.
Lozano has already demonstrated his ability to perform at a high level in MLS, and ESPN reports that he would welcome a move to Los Angeles as an opportunity for a fresh chapter in his career.

On paper, the deal works in everyone's favor. LA gains another attacking weapon to complement Marco Reus and Joseph Paintsil, San Diego finally move on from a player they no longer want while shedding part of his wage bill, and Lozano gets the chance to resurrect his career after nearly a year on the sidelines — without giving up a cent of his lucrative contract.
Naturally, LA Galaxy are taking a significant gamble, but given the arrangement is only a loan, it represents a calculated risk with considerable upside considering the club's current predicament.
Having just celebrated his 31st birthday and missed out on featuring in what would have been his third World Cup, the former Mexican standout may be on the brink of a comeback — bringing an end to a prolonged saga that has kept one of the most gifted Mexican players of his generation away from the game.
