Saturday's La Liga clash between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club was forcibly halted and ultimately abandoned following protests by home supporters targeting club president Raúl Martín Presa.
The fixture at Estadio de Vallecas, located in Madrid's Puente de Vallecas neighborhood southeast of the city center, was interrupted three times by referee José María Sánchez Martínez, with the final stoppage resulting in the match being called off entirely after just 30 minutes of play.
The initial suspension came after what appeared to be a coordinated protest in the 13th minute, with Rayo supporters hurling paper planes and marbles onto the pitch. Both captains held discussions with the referee while ground staff worked to clear the debris from the playing surface. The clock continued running and play eventually resumed at the 21-minute mark.
Just one minute later, another wave of planes and balls landed on the field, forcing a second stoppage. Players retreated to the dressing rooms as an announcement was made that the game would restart within 10 minutes, accompanied by a warning that any further disruption would lead to abandonment. Rayo captains Óscar Valentín and Isi Palazón were spotted speaking with supporters in an attempt to calm the situation, but to no avail. When the players returned and play resumed, it was halted almost instantly, with referee Sánchez Martínez also seeking guidance from police.
With no viable path forward, the decision was made to abandon the match entirely, prompting Rayo's most fervent supporters to celebrate as if a goal had been scored. Their aim had been to make a statement against Presa, and forcing an abandonment represented the most disruptive outcome achievable. The club's unofficial anthem, La Vida Pirata—The Pirate Life, rang out through the stadium, while fans also took a moment to acknowledge the Athletic Club players, who had been unwittingly drawn into a bitter and long-running dispute.
La Liga issued a statement shortly afterward confirming the match had been "suspended by the referee's decision following repeated objects being thrown onto the pitch." The governing body also made clear that it "strongly condemns this type of behavior, which jeopardizes safety and makes the normal course of the competition impossible."
Speculation briefly emerged that the game could be rescheduled for Sunday, but this did not materialize, and the Athletic Club delegation departed for the airport to fly back to Bilbao. The match will need to be rearranged for a later date, to be confirmed in due course.
Spain's football federation (RFEF) has the authority to impose a "total or partial closure" of Rayo's ground for up to three matches under its disciplinary regulations.
Longstanding Conflict at Rayo Vallecano

Madrid-born businessman Raúl Martín Presa has served as Rayo Vallecano president since 2011, though tensions between the club's leadership and its supporters have persisted throughout his tenure.
The Athletic's Dermot Corrigan noted in 2020: "Internal conflict at the Estadio de Vallecas is nothing new. Strife between Rayo's left-leaning fanbase and conservative ownership has been constant for decades. It is part of what makes one of Madrid's biggest clubs such an object of fascination inside and outside the city."
This was the first home match of the season Rayo had been able to host at Estadio de Vallecas, following a period when safety concerns forced the club to relocate home games to Leganés on Madrid's southwestern outskirts. Presa has faced accusations of neglecting the club's facilities, along with broader complaints about poor administration stretching back many years.
The state of the pitch itself raised alarm last season when a La Liga fixture against Real Oviedo was called off by officials due to concerns over player safety.
The previous weekend, a group of Rayo supporters made their frustrations known by breaking into the stadium and vandalizing the VIP area used by the president and his associates.
Ahead of Saturday's match, Rayo vice-president José María Sardá de Abreu told Movistar+: "Little has changed. A few things have had to be tweaked, but tweaked, not changed. It makes no sense to go through what we've been through. Of course we're going to sit in the VIP box. What happened was despicable. This is sport, not politics. We can do things better or worse, but to reach this point of violence ... It's a top-flight club, with sound finances ... Sure, things aren't entirely right socially, but there are people who provoke this situation."
'Years of Disastrous Management,' Fans Say

"What took place today during the match against Athletic Club is an inevitable reflection of the anger, frustration and outrage felt by thousands of supporters after years of disastrous management by Raúl Martín Presa," read a statement from the Rayo Vallecano Fans' Association released following the abandonment.
"The fanbase has been pushed to a breaking point after 15 years of neglected infrastructure, chaotic administration, a loss of identity, and ongoing contempt for employees and supporters, as well as for the working-class community of Vallecas and its values. What is unfolding today is the result of a fire that has been left to burn for far too long, with no one making any effort to extinguish it."
The fans' association maintained that the protest was "legitimate and democratic," as well as "necessary and peaceful." The statement continued: "It is the consequence of three decades of putting the safety and health of 15,000 people at risk every fortnight."
Supporters described the "loss" of Estadio de Vallecas in July as the "final straw" in this ongoing saga, alleging that fans were "denied the opportunity to reclaim money that rightfully belongs to them. But there are hundreds of other examples. That is why we will continue to protest."
Rayo Vallecano requires, they insist, "a change of direction."
"The deterioration, insecurity and discontent are undeniable, day after day, among the fans, in the dressing rooms and in the offices, affecting everyone who keeps the organization running. The dictatorial, authoritarian management of Raúl Martín Presa threatens to sever Rayo from the heart of Vallecas. The Rayo community will not stand for it. The institutions should not stand for it either. For the history of our club, its workers, stadium, squad and supporters: PRESA, GET OUT NOW!"
