LAFC Icon Makes Historic Move from Pitch to Boardroom as New Owner
LAFC revealed on Wednesday that former striker and unquestioned club icon Carlos Vela will rejoin the Southern California organization as a part-owner.
Vela became part of LAFC in 2018 as their inaugural Designated Player—essentially, their very first signing—in franchise history, and following his role in the club's remarkable ascent during its formative years, he said his final goodbye to the black and gold team in October 2024, when he competed in his last professional match.
The organization issued a statement on Wednesday revealing Vela's new position, and key LAFC personalities praised the iconic Mexican forward.
"Carlos [Vela] has consistently represented the dedication to excellence, ambition, and the leadership mindset that LAFC represents," Lead Managing Owner Bennett Rosenthal stated. "Having Carlos become part of our ownership group is a declaration about his standing as both a legendary figure in our franchise's history and his dedication to remaining a vital part of our future."
LAFC's general manager, John Thorrington, commented: "Simply put, this organization would not exist as it does today without him. He helped define our character, our playing philosophy, and our bond with the city from day one."

Vela dedicated the last six years of his professional playing days wearing the black and gold uniform. After maintaining his connection with LAFC as the franchise's inaugural ambassador following his retirement, he now comes back "home" as an owner, deepening his relationship with the organization where he felt most appreciated.
"LAFC has always meant more than just a team to me—it is home," Vela expressed. "From day one, we aimed to create something extraordinary for Los Angeles, and I am tremendously proud of what we have achieved together.
"Becoming an owner is both an honor and a responsibility I embrace wholeheartedly. I'm thrilled to continue backing the organization, our athletes and our supporters as we keep developing for the future."
Less than two years ago, Vela rejoined LAFC after nearly a year away from the game to conclude his playing career with the organization. When he signed his final deal with the team before the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs, he expressed similar sentiments about his affection for the club. Vela hung up his boots permanently at the season's end, establishing a legacy as the most impactful player in LAFC's history.

Vela signed with LAFC before its inaugural MLS campaign in 2018. Following seven brilliant seasons in La Liga with Real Sociedad—where he also departed as a club icon—the gifted Mexican joined LAFC as the central figure of the newly established franchise.
But nobody could have imagined Vela's LAFC journey unfolding as successfully as it did. Vela claimed MLS MVP honors in his second year with the team following a 34-goal campaign—a mark that remains unbroken today. After securing the Supporters' Shield in 2019 and 2022, Vela led the squad that captured LAFC's first-ever MLS Cup championship in 2022.
Just five years after its founding, the Los Angeles franchise had already achieved the summit of American soccer, with Vela spearheading the effort and helping them establish themselves as an undeniable MLS force and one of the premier clubs across North America.
Now eight years since his LAFC journey commenced, Vela will be responsible for helping the organization achieve even greater success moving forward.
