LAFC Press Conference Goes Viral as Son Heung-Min Gets Hilariously Confused for US National Team Player
Son Heung-Min has already etched his name into MLS history with his remarkable and groundbreaking transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to LAFC this week. Shortly afterward, though, the former Premier League sensation's unveiling at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles became extremely uncomfortable.
At Son's debut press conference with the team, Los Angeles city councilwoman Heather Hutt commended the South Korean striker for deciding to compete in America after spending ten years at Tottenham. She then seemed to suggest that Son was part of the USMNT and promised her "backing" for Son in representing the stars and stripes when the United States co-hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"When the World Cup arrives, we are anticipating a victory here in Los Angeles for the USA. ... We are here to back you in achieving that goal," Hutt stated. Son seemed to nod courteously in acknowledgment.
Watch that uncomfortable moment below:
Son has worn red, white and blue—for his homeland of South Korea. The 33-year-old currently leads the national squad and has guided South Korea to three World Cup qualifications; he ranks as South Korea's second highest scorer of all time with 51 international goals across 134 matches.
A comparable situation happened eight years earlier when former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger was questioned by a journalist about whether he could assist the Chicago Fire in winning a World Cup. With players like Son, Lionel Messi, and Thomas Müller bringing their skills to America recently, it's reasonable to say U.S. soccer has gained popularity since then, but there's obviously still significant room for growth.
