Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara says he has "moved on" after his transfer to Chelsea fell apart on Deadline Day, though he acknowledged there could be "other opportunities" for a move down the line.
Camara had been set to make Stamford Bridge his new home on Sept. 1, chosen by Xabi Alonso to fill the void left by Enzo Fernández, who departed for Manchester City. However, at the eleventh hour, the Senegal international's deal unraveled in a dramatic chain of events just before the summer window slammed shut.
After Monaco striker Folarin Balogun encountered problems during his medical ahead of a proposed move to Everton, the French club rushed to sanction another significant sale to sidestep serious financial concerns. A deal sending Camara to Chelsea quickly took shape, with the 22-year-old agreeing to a six-year contract. However, Monaco pulled the plug at the last moment once it appeared Balogun's move to Everton was back on track.
Ultimately, neither player ended up departing the Stade Louis II. Chelsea were left as the biggest casualties, missing out on both Fernández and Camara. Nevertheless, the latter appears to have put the Deadline Day drama firmly behind him.
"There was a chance I could leave. It didn't happen at the last minute and that's just football," Camara said ahead of Monaco's fixture against Strasbourg. "I've turned the page and am fully focused on the season."
"It's part of life as a professional footballer. I kept my composure and didn't let it affect me too much," he said. "Once it's done, there's no use dwelling on it."
What the Future Holds for Chelsea, Camara
Failing to bring in a Fernández replacement has made Chelsea's January transfer window objectives crystal clear: secure a midfielder. The team's struggles in central areas have been glaring since the Argentine's departure, a situation worsened by Moisés Caicedo's ongoing fitness problems.
Natural fullbacks Reece James and Malo Gusto have each been deployed in Alonso's midfield, with little to show for it. Camara's arrival could have been transformative for the Blues, but they must now plug the gap until at least the winter window.
Recent reports suggest the club will revive their pursuit of Camara or alternatively target Roma midfielder Manu Koné, though whether either will be available in January remains uncertain.
Liverpool add another layer of complexity to the Camara situation. The Reds have been connected with the midfielder as a possible replacement for Alexis Mac Allister, who revealed he has yet to be offered a new deal. A bidding war next summer for the Monaco star looks increasingly likely, particularly if he maintains his impressive current form.
Camara Teases Potential Future Move
Camara stoked the speculation linking him to both Premier League heavyweights on Friday when he declined to close the door on a future transfer.
"I can contribute a great deal to the team," he said. "Football moves quickly. Perhaps other opportunities will arise. But right now, I'm keeping my focus on the season with Monaco."
Despite the swirling transfer talk, Camara has made an impressive start to the 2026–27 campaign. He featured for every minute of Monaco's opening five games and even netted a goal in their Conference League playoff tie against Górnik Zabrze.
The French club claimed victory in all five outings, highlighted by a dramatic 2–1 comeback triumph over Paris Saint-Germain last weekend. Manager Filipe Luís clearly recognizes he cannot afford to sideline his key midfielder, unlike his approach with Balogun.
The American forward has been completely absent from the pitch this season and was omitted from Monaco's Conference League squad in the wake of his failed transfer saga with Everton. The club has even acknowledged it is still exploring exit options for Balogun, though nothing concrete has emerged as yet.
