Lamine Yamal Dazzles in Standout Season Debut as Barcelona Dominate Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona's lethal attack put on a stunning display Monday evening, cruising to a 5–2 victory over Rayo Vallecano to secure three consecutive wins to open the campaign under defending champion manager Hansi Flick.

Aside from a few isolated moments where Barça's defensive vulnerabilities were exposed, it was yet another commanding performance from the La Liga champions—one that proved enough to leapfrog rivals Real Madrid at the summit of the standings.

The Two Minutes That Defined the Game

Conceding the first goal of the season could have been a serious setback, but within less than 10 minutes of Rayo's opener, Barcelona had already moved ahead thanks to a clinical two-minute burst that produced two outstanding finishes.

Barça leveled through a swift combination initiated by Pedri, with an intelligent flick from the impressive Xavi Espart releasing Raphinha into space. The Brazilian cleverly shook off his marker with a subtle body feint to advance on goal. Facing only Dani Cárdenas, he drove a low, powerful shot into the bottom corner to equalize in the 19th minute.

Just two minutes later, the hosts seized the lead through Yamal's first moment of brilliance this season. Barcelona's signature high counter-press proved effective, with Marc Bernal finding Yamal on the edge of the box. A superb first touch allowed him to evade two defenders and set himself up to fire a perfectly placed near-post effort beyond Cárdenas—who likely anticipated a curling shot toward the far post. GK: Joan García—6.4: Appeared uncertain between the sticks, which is unusual for him. He spilled a couple of rebounds and showed hesitation on a few occasions. Not his finest outing from the typically reliable goalkeeper.

RB: Jules Koundé—7.0: Was too slow to challenge Álvaro García, and Barça were punished as the winger breezed past him with ease and had ample time to set up Rayo's opener. Simply not up to the required standard from the Frenchman.

CB: Pau Cubarsí—7.5: Handled his defensive duties well but was uncharacteristically sloppy in his distribution from the back, misplacing a few passes that would normally be routine for him.

CB: Andreas Christensen—7.2: Was fractionally slow to track Camello's run, leaving him just short of blocking the shot that led to Rayo's first goal. Beyond that, he was dependable, and Christensen completing 90 minutes after his injury struggles over the past two seasons is a positive in itself.

LB: Xavi Espart—8.1: Another impressive outing from the La Masia product, who excelled as an inverted fullback pushing high up the pitch and showcasing his outstanding technical ability. He registered his first professional assist with a delicate first-time touch for Raphinha's opener. Was caught out for Rayo's second, with his lack of aerial presence exploited from a corner.

DM: Marc Bernal—8.4: Thrived by pushing further forward than he had in the opening two matches of the season. He delivered intelligent through-balls, tested his luck from range, and at times triggered Barça's press—the latter directly leading to his assist for Yamal's screamer.

DM: Pedri—7.3: Not quite as influential as he was against Athletic Club, but Monday evening's play still flowed through Pedri. Though he operated in a deeper position for much of the match, he produced a couple of outstanding through-balls that drew appreciation from the home supporters.

RW: Lamine Yamal—9.5: Welcome back, Lamine Yamal. The season has truly begun for Barcelona's No. 10, who netted a breathtaking goal and delivered his first mesmerizing performance of the campaign. Unplayable.

AM: Dani Olmo—7.0: A subdued display from Olmo. He contributed a handful of decent attacking moments but faded in and out of the game. He clearly appears to still be shaking off some ring rust.

LW: Anthony Gordon—7.8: The least prominent of Barcelona's attackers, yet Gordon still put in a solid shift, linking up effectively, showcasing his pace, and proving vital to his side's press. He was involved in Lejeune's own goal and then a slick back-heel set up Raphinha's strike—his third assist of the season.

ST: Raphinha—9.2: Another match leading the attack, another brace for Raphinha, who now has five goals for the season. His movement and pressing were once again excellent, and his clinical edge in front of goal early in the campaign evokes memories of his remarkable 35-goal 2024–25 season.

SUB: Fermín López (64' for Olmo)—6.4: His energy injected a welcome spark against tiring legs late in the match. Came close to scoring his fourth of the season.

SUB: Rodri (64' for Bernal)—6.5: Another confidence-building cameo for Rodri.

SUB: João Cancelo (77' for Pedri)—6.0: His introduction allowed Espart to shift centrally alongside Rodri. Attempted a long-range effort, but his shot drifted wide.

SUB: Karim Adeyemi (78' for Gordon)—6.9: Could have made more of the one clear chance he had during his cameo. Nevertheless, he provided the assist for Yamal's second of the evening.
