Barcelona may have been eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday night, but that didn't prevent teenage sensation Lamine Yamal from adding yet another entry to the competition's record books.
At just 18 years and 275 days old, the Spanish winger became the youngest player in history to reach 20 goal contributions in the Champions League. Yamal has now accumulated 11 goals and nine assists on Europe's grandest stage, all before turning 19.
The youngster reached the milestone during Barcelona's 2–1 win over Atlético Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Yamal broke the deadlock at the Metropolitano within the opening four minutes, sparking what he hoped would be a stunning turnaround for Barcelona, who needed to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg.
Despite his heroic display, the Spain international was unable to guide his side into the semifinals. Diego Simeone's outfit knocked out the reigning Spanish champions 3–2 on aggregate, sending Barcelona home with a bitter sense of disappointment.
Yamal Surpasses Erling Haaland's Champions League Milestone
Yamal's strike against Atlético Madrid also secured another personal record for his already impressive résumé. The 18-year-old is now the youngest player ever to register 10 or more goal contributions in a single Champions League season, a benchmark previously set by Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian forward had racked up 11 goal contributions—10 goals and one assist—during the 2019–20 campaign when he was 19 years and 212 days old.
With Barcelona now out of the tournament, Yamal won't have the opportunity to eclipse Haaland's overall tally this season, but reaching double figures remains a remarkable achievement for someone his age. To put it in perspective, the winger has more Champions League goal contributions in 2025–26 than the likes of Vinicius Junior, Mohamed Salah, and Ousmane Dembélé, among other elite players.
Throughout Barcelona's quarterfinal run, Yamal scored six goals and provided four assists. He netted three times in the knockout rounds alone, consistently delivering when the pressure was highest.
The records offer little more than cold comfort, but Yamal and Barcelona can still look forward to what appears to be an all-but-certain La Liga title. Flick's squad sit nine points ahead of Real Madrid and are firmly on course to retain the Spanish championship in consecutive seasons.
