Lamine Yamal Shatters Messi and Ronaldo Records While Hunting Down Real Madrid Legend's Historic Mark

Lamine Yamal Shatters Messi and Ronaldo Records While Hunting Down Real Madrid Legend's Historic Mark

Lamine Yamal's brilliant match-winning goal for Barcelona against Athletic Club on Saturday wasn't just the most visually stunning strike of his professional career—it also marked his 50th senior goal.

It's easy to overlook that Barcelona's number 10 is merely 18 years old, though this fact gets mentioned constantly each time he achieves another milestone, which seems to happen nearly every match.

Cutting inside onto his favored left foot while the match remained scoreless and Athletic were unlucky not to be ahead, Yamal executed a finish that has become his trademark since his youth days (which, to be fair, was just last season). The ball curved so dramatically beyond Unai Simon that the goalkeeper didn't even attempt a save, pulling his hands back as he twisted to watch the spinning ball strike the crossbar and bounce into his goal.

Yamal ran off to perform his trademark celebration, forming the number 304 with his fingers as a tribute to his hometown area of Rocafonda's postal code. However, it was a different number that caught attention afterward: goal number 50.

At merely 18 years and 237 days old, Yamal is over two years younger than Lionel Messi was when the Argentinian netted his 50th professional goal. Cristiano Ronaldo had reached 21 before achieving fifty goals for club and country.

Comparing Yamal's development path with football's greatest modern talents demonstrates just how exceptional Barcelona's nimble youngster truly is. Even Kylian Mbappé had to wait until 19 years and 28 days before reaching his 50th professional goal.

Though Messi and Ronaldo matured later than Yamal, La Liga's brightest star still faces challenges if he wants to surpass another legendary figure from the league.

Raúl González in action for Real Madrid.

This represents the most productive season of Yamal's budding career. Despite playing 1,500 fewer minutes, the teenager has already exceeded last season's total of 18 goals in all competitions (Saturday's exquisite finish was his 19th). In La Liga specifically, Yamal has netted an impressive 14 goals, but to become the league's most lethal 18-year-old, he must surpass Raúl González's mark of 19 goals for Real Madrid during the 1995–96 campaign.

Raúl eventually became Real Madrid's all-time leading scorer and maintains an elevated status among the club's legendary figures. However, his potential wasn't immediately obvious.

The former Atlético Madrid youth prospect didn't instantly wow Real's coaching team. Ángel Cappa, who worked as Jorge Valdano's assistant when Raúl debuted, remembered the youngster's training performances. "Raúl handles the ball poorly, his dribbling is weak, he can't win headers, his shooting is subpar," he told Sid Lowe for his influential book Fear and Loathing in La Liga.

"If you examine his obvious abilities to determine his potential, if you create an evaluation list, there's not much there," Cappa stated frankly.

But then match time arrives.

"When play begins, he controls the ball beautifully, his dribbling becomes exceptional, he wins aerial duels, he scores goals in countless ways," Cappa praised. "He transforms into perfection."

Yamal's abilities have been clearly evident on every platform for years.

"I noticed it during his first practice session, Lamine was 15 years old," Robert Lewandowski remembered. "It was season's end and some players were being evaluated. He was facing a seasoned left-back and dominated him completely. I've witnessed many talented players but they required development time. With Lamine, I observed something that needed no development. I've never encountered such talent at that age."

Raúl can still reference his exceptional season as an 18-year-old in 1995–96 to challenge Yamal's uncontested supremacy—at least for now. Barcelona has 11 league matches remaining and their dynamic right winger needs just five more goals to equal the Real Madrid icon's record. Even if his milestone falls, Raúl can find comfort knowing he's not the first legendary player to come up short when compared to Yamal.
