Lamine Yamal has the opportunity to back up his bold claim of making Marc Cucurella suffer when the two square off in El Clásico this Sunday.
One of the many compelling storylines surrounding the high-profile showdown at Camp Nou is the encounter between Spanish national teammates Yamal and Cucurella.
Cucurella is set to make his debut in the iconic fixture, having joined Madrid from Chelsea in a €60 million ($60 million) deal at the beginning of the summer.
News of the transfer emerged on the eve of the 2026 World Cup, when Spain's players were gearing up for their opening group-stage match in North America back in June. During a media session, Yamal was asked by Spanish radio program Tiempo de Juego whether there had been any banter between the soon-to-be rivals in training. He replied: "I told him he'll start the first [Clásico] game and be a substitute in the second because I'm going to eat him alive."
Yamal tried to deliver the line with a straight face, but couldn't hold back a laugh.
Ballon d'Or Nominees Go Head to Head

The Yamal vs. Cucurella battle on the Camp Nou flank promises to be one of the most fascinating and potentially decisive duels this Sunday. Both players feature on the 30-man shortlist for Monday's Ballon d'Or and rank among the finest in the world in their respective roles as right winger and left back.
There is arguably no better forward in the game right now than Yamal, who became the first player across Europe's top leagues to register both 10 goals and 10 assists this season, capping it with a brilliant individual display in the midweek loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Cucurella, on the other hand, has had a relatively quiet start to his time as a Madrid player, with Los Blancos managing just two clean sheets so far this campaign.
The 28-year-old has yet to contribute a goal or assist for his new club either, and appears some distance from the World Cup-winning all-round fullback that Luis de la Fuente recently hailed as "sensational."
Nevertheless, Cucurella has a track record of being a persistent thorn in the side of elite attackers in marquee matches. In last season's Champions League tie between Chelsea and Barcelona, for instance, Cucurella delivered a Man of the Match performance against his fellow Spaniard, prompting Blues goalkeeper Robert Sánchez to quip that his teammate "had Lamine Yamal in his pocket."
Cucurella Set for Rough Reception

Cucurella is set to make his Clásico debut for Real Madrid, a decade after his one and only first-team appearance for Barcelona.
The left back was born and raised in Catalonia and joined Barça's La Masia academy at the age of 14. Although a regular for the reserve side, Cucurella's only appearance for the senior team came as a late substitute in a Copa del Rey victory over Real Murcia.
Since then, he has gone on to represent Eibar, Getafe, Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea, before his high-profile transfer to Spain's other footballing giant this summer.
In the intensity of El Clásico, the returning academy product is unlikely to receive a warm welcome from the home faithful.
