Lewandowski Drops Bombshell MLS Clue While Boldly Addressing His Retirement Future

Robert Lewandowski is savoring his third La Liga championship in four years with Barcelona, but the legendary striker has stoked speculation surrounding a possible move to MLS, stating he is "considering" his options as his deal with the Spanish club approaches its expiration.

Lewandowski came off the bench for the final 13 minutes of Barcelona's 2–0 victory over Real Madrid that clinched the La Liga title. After the match, the seasoned forward spoke to Polish broadcaster Eleven Sports, offering some candid insights into his future plans.

"There might be an option to move to a lesser league," Lewandowski said, seemingly hinting at MLS, via SPORT. "I'm nearly 38, but I feel great physically, so I'm weighing it up. I need to think about the possibility that it could be time to play with more freedom and enjoy myself. Maybe that door opens, and I'm not closing it."

"What happens in the fall? I'm not sure. I just learned that I have 51 days remaining on my contract, so there's still time. I'll hear out a few more proposals before making up my mind."

Chicago Fire Confirm Robert Lewandowski Interest

Lewandowski's comments come just days after Chicago Fire sporting director Gregg Broughton sat down with talkSPORT, openly confirming the enduring interest both the club and MLS as a whole have in the Polish icon.

"Robert [Lewandowski] is a player that MLS as a league has interest in," Broughton said. "Keep in mind that players within MLS — and this is something that sets the league apart — are owned by the league itself rather than the individual clubs.

"So, we've made our interest known in terms of bringing a player of that quality to Chicago Fire. That said, Robert is still a Barcelona player, and it wouldn't be appropriate for me to discuss someone who remains under contract at another club."

Several reports have suggested that Chicago are looking to attract Lewandowski with a contract that would place him among the top earners in MLS. Meanwhile, AC Milan and other Serie A clubs have also been linked with the soon-to-be 38-year-old.

Barcelona are reportedly open to retaining Lewandowski, though only under a substantially reduced salary and diminished role — terms the striker has apparently been reluctant to accept.

One thing that appears certain, however, is that Lewandowski has no intention of hanging up his boots after this campaign.

Lewandowski Dismisses Retirement Amid Uncertain Future

During his conversation with Eleven Sports, Lewandowski also brushed aside any notion of calling it a career.

Fellow Polish international Wojciech Szczęsny recently joked that Lewandowski should retire and then evaluate his options, drawing a parallel to his own brief retirement before joining Barcelona as a free agent in September 2024.

When pressed on that idea, Lewandowski quickly put retirement talk to rest.

"You know what Wojciech [Szczęsny] is like," Lewandowski said. "It's not as if I wake up in pain every morning. I appreciate where I am and I'm loving every moment. We'll see what the future holds, but one thing is certain — I will keep playing."

With that much established, the question of where Lewandowski will ply his trade next season is set to remain a major talking point in the weeks ahead.
