Lewandowski Exposes the One Major Obstacle Standing in Lamine Yamal's Way
Barcelona's prospects for the 2025–26 campaign will largely hinge on the offensive contributions from Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal.
However, these two talents find themselves at completely opposite stages of their professional journeys. While Lewandowski may be experiencing his last campaign among Europe's top tier, the 18-year-old Yamal is projected to become not just Barcelona's premier talent for the coming decade and beyond, but a generational player capable of defining an entire era.
To meet such lofty aspirations, Yamal needs to continue his development while maintaining his exceptional standards over an extended period. According to Lewandowski, maintaining that excellence over time represents the greatest obstacle facing Barcelona's number 10.
"The massive test for him won't be next season, or even the one following, but in three years or beyond, discovering the psychological drive to remain motivated," Lewandowski shared with The Times. "No one at his age can maintain Lamine's current mindset for 10 or 15 years. Even a 5% decline over five years could prove insurmountable.
"I question whether someone who begins competing at 16 can sustain elite performance for two decades.

"While it's not his responsibility how society operates today, maintaining that natural playing instinct amid expectations and social media scrutiny will prove challenging for him."
Earning recognition as one of football's elite while still a teenager, particularly at a club like Barcelona, creates enormous pressure. Yamal faced criticism this summer regarding his widely-discussed birthday celebration, perfectly illustrating how his actions receive intense examination.
Lewandowski encouraged Yamal to establish equilibrium and develop mental resilience to handle external distractions. Nevertheless, the experienced forward clearly has faith in Yamal's abilities and potential for continued growth, a concerning prospect for opponents given his admission that he witnessed Yamal humiliating defenders from his very first senior team practice.
"I've observed many talented individuals, but they required development time. With Lamine [Yamal], I witnessed something that required no such period. I've never encountered that level of ability at such a young age."
