Lewandowski Shatters Messi's Champions League Record in Age-Defying Masterclass
Robert Lewandowski justified Hansi Flick's high expectations with a double strike for Barcelona against Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, extending his record of scoring against different Champions League opponents to an unprecedented 41 teams.
Lionel Messi previously held this distinction, having found the net in Europe's top club tournament against 40 separate sides before Lewandowski's exceptional career longevity propelled him into record-breaking territory.
The 37-year-old has finally begun showing signs of decline this campaign. Physical setbacks have affected him more severely than before, and there's increasing acknowledgment that Barcelona may let his deal run down next summer. However, Hansi Flick has consistently maintained complete confidence in his former Bayern Munich striker.
"You suggested Lewandowski was perhaps done, didn't you?" Flick questioned the gathered press following Barcelona's 7–2 demolition of Newcastle. "Well, he netted twice more, in the Champions League."
"He remains among the elite players and top strikers," Flick emphasized, with considerable merit.

Flick Defends 'Incredible' Lewandowski
While other field positions can mask themselves behind various intangibles, nothing exposes a player more than serving as striker for a top-tier club. "It's challenging for our center-forwards," Flick noted, "as they're constantly evaluated by their goal output."
Lewandowski has, throughout most of his career, succeeded in those basic assessments. Following a developmental first season at Borussia Dortmund, Lewandowski has netted at least 20 goals in 14 straight seasons. Despite splitting playing time with Ferran Torres this year, he currently has 16 to his name.
Flick has reduced his dependence on Lewandowski this campaign, presumably knowing the striker won't remain in Catalonia beyond this term. Over half of the Polish forward's La Liga matches have been as a substitute, while he's completed only seven games across all tournaments. Nevertheless, as the season progresses and pressure mounts, this is precisely when Flick can count on his well-rested veteran.
"He possesses extensive experience," the German manager observed. "In matches like these, he's phenomenal." In these contests, against these teams and 40 others similar to them.
Raphinha Also Echoes Messi Brilliance

While Lewandowski secured a brace, Raphinha equaled his colleague's two-goal haul while also providing two assists. The Brazilian became the first Barcelona player to accumulate four direct goal involvements in a single Champions League match since Messi orchestrated a rout of Lyon in 2019, according to Mundo Deportivo.
In the initial encounter at Newcastle's St James' Park, Raphinha produced one of his poorest displays of the campaign. Lethargic without the ball and careless in possession, the Brazilian failed to even test Aaron Ramsdale that evening, much less beat him.
Raphinha has decisively compensated for that poor showing. Prior to his excellence in the second leg, the 29-year-old scored a treble in a 5–2 triumph over Sevilla.
"He stands among our most essential squad members," Flick praised when discussing his preferred player, "who seamlessly integrates into our approach and principles. He creates such influence in our matches. I understand his desire to develop and demonstrate his quality to everyone."
