The Liga MX Clausura 2026 season is reaching its peak, with the regular season now behind us, as eight clubs prepare to take part in the always thrilling, unpredictable and captivating playoffs to determine Mexico's top-flight champion.
"La Liguilla" stands as the crown jewel of Liga MX, with its action-packed playoff format consistently delivering unforgettable moments every six months. The Clausura 2026 postseason field is shaping up to be particularly compelling.
For the first time in two years, Mexico's "big four" clubs will all feature in La Liguilla. Pumas, Chivas and Cruz Azul led the standings, and despite a disappointing campaign, Club América secured the final playoff spot with an eighth-place finish.
Back-to-back defending champions Toluca will be chasing a historic third consecutive title, with Pachuca, Atlas and Tigres rounding out the playoff field.
Liga MX scrapped the play-in round for the Clausura 2026, meaning the playoffs will begin directly with the quarterfinal ties, setting up some highly appealing matchups to open La Liguilla.
Here's everything you need to know about the Liga MX Clausura 2026 playoffs.
Liga MX Clausura 2026: Playoff Teams, Matchups

|---|---|---|
1. | Pumas | 36 |

3. | Cruz Azul | 33 |
4. | Pachuca | 31 |
5. | Toluca | 30 |
6. | Atlas | 26 |

Pumas pipped Chivas on goal difference to claim top spot in the regular season standings for the first time since the Apertura 2015 tournament. Their prize? A quarterfinal clash against fierce rivals Club América. The two Mexico City heavyweights meeting in El Clásico Capitalino (The Capital Derby) is undoubtedly the standout tie of the quarterfinal round.
Chivas and Tigres, however, also serve up a mouthwatering encounter. Gabriel Milito's Chivas held top spot for much of the regular season, but their failure to win their final fixture now means they must face last season's runners-up. Chivas will be missing several key starters who will join Mexico's national team World Cup camp, giving Tigres — who won't lose a single player — an added advantage heading into the tie.
In Joel Huiqui's first match in charge following the sacking of Nicolás Larcamón, Cruz Azul snapped a miserable nine-game winless run with a victory over Necaxa that lifted them to third in the table. La Máquina will now face Atlas, who beat América on the final matchday to book their playoff spot for the first time in three years.
Lastly, Pachuca and reigning champions Toluca will go head-to-head in the fourth and final quarterfinal pairing. The two sides shared several memorable playoff encounters throughout the 2000s, and both will fancy their chances of reaching the semifinals.

Liga MX Clausura 2026 Playoffs: Format

Beyond the removal of the play-in round, the overall structure of the Liga MX playoffs remains the same.
As has long been the custom in Liga MX, if a playoff tie is level after both legs, the away goals rule does not apply, nor does extra time or a penalty shootout. Instead, the club with the superior regular season seeding will progress.
This rule, however, does not apply in the final. Should the final remain tied after 180 minutes, extra time and a potential penalty shootout will decide the champions — as was the case when Toluca beat Tigres on spot kicks last season.
