Mexico national team forward Armando González has departed his hometown club Chivas to join Olympiacos.
The Greek powerhouse reached an agreement with Chivas for an initial fee of $10 million (€8.5 million) plus €2 million in performance bonuses, meaning the total package could make the 23-year-old the most expensive acquisition in Olympiacos's history this century.
A sell-on clause was also incorporated into the agreement, granting Chivas a 20% stake in the player's rights for any potential future transfer.
González had been pushing for a move to European football throughout the summer and will now join the most decorated club in Greek football history, with ambitions to unseat AEK Athens as the nation's league title holders.
Armando González Deserved Move to European Soccer
It has been a meteoric rise for "La Hormiga" over the past year. He struggled to establish a consistent role at Chivas early in his career, rotating between the first team and the club's reserve side in Mexico's second division. However, since the start of the 2025–26 season, González has been relentless in front of goal.
Head coach Gabriel Milito took charge ahead of the Apertura 2025 campaign and handed González the starting striker role ahead of the likes of Alan Pulido and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez. In his first full season as a regular starter, González netted 12 goals and claimed the Liga MX Golden Boot.
The forward maintained his impressive form and added another 12 goals during the Clausura 2026 season, earning himself a well-deserved call-up to represent Mexico at the 2026 World Cup. Although he appeared in just one match for El Tri that summer, he had already demonstrated he was ready to test himself beyond Liga MX.
His 24 goals in 36 appearances for Chivas in 2025–26 were the highest tally of any Mexican player across Liga MX, and second only to Atlético San Luis's João Pedro's 26 over the same two-season stretch in Mexico's top flight. González departs Chivas having scored 29 goals in 69 outings for the club.

González was officially presented as an Olympiacos player over the weekend, with the Mexican forward expressing his emotions on completing his long-awaited move to European football.
"I'm very happy," González said. "It's a tremendous opportunity, and I'm extremely grateful to the club [Olympiacos] for giving me this chance and for wanting me so badly. I'm thrilled and excited to be here at the biggest club in Greece."
"This is a very big club, a historic institution, and I know what I can achieve here, what I want to achieve here," González added.

Closing an eight-year chapter at Chivas, González did not leave without delivering a heartfelt farewell and an emotional message for the future.
"I lived here, I grew up here, I was shaped here," González said of Chivas. "I'm a Chivas brother for life, so I want to thank you for everything. I love you all and I hope this isn't a goodbye but a see you soon, because I'll always be from Chivas. I love you."
González is the first Mexican player to make the move from Liga MX to European football this summer. With just one week remaining in the transfer window, he may well remain the only departure despite Mexico's highly impressive 2026 World Cup campaign.
