Lionel Messi Breaks Silence on Barcelona's La Liga Glory With Powerful Four-Word Message

Lionel Messi Breaks Silence on Barcelona's La Liga Glory With Powerful Four-Word Message

Barcelona secured their 29th La Liga title on Sunday evening, and the club's greatest-ever player, Lionel Messi, took to social media to send his former club a heartfelt message: "Campeones!!! Visca el Barça!!!"

Barça sealed the championship by defeating Clásico rivals Real Madrid at Camp Nou, stretching their unbeaten run in the league to 11 consecutive victories. A stunning Marcus Rashford free kick got the hosts off to a flying start against a Madrid side that seemed more concerned with keeping the peace among themselves, before Ferran Torres capped off a slick team move to double Barça's advantage before the break.

Dani Olmo's deft flick that teed up Torres for his goal was reminiscent of Messi himself, and the Argentine was undoubtedly watching Sunday's events unfold in Catalonia after putting on a show in Inter Miami's 4–2 win over Toronto FC the day before.

The defending MLS Cup champions currently sit third in the Eastern Conference, having won six of their opening 12 matches. Messi, for his part, has racked up 12 goal contributions in 11 appearances, including nine goals. He continues to perform at a high level as he approaches his sixth World Cup, though he has yet to fully commit to participating.

Severe financial mismanagement forced Messi out of Barcelona after 21 wonderful years in 2021. The Argentine had no desire to leave Catalonia, and there was no animosity in the parting. It is a city he holds dear, and a club that played a pivotal role in shaping him into one of the greatest players of all time.

As a result, Messi still takes great joy in the Blaugrana's successes. After his former club clinched the La Liga title in particularly memorable fashion — with their fiercest rivals on the losing end — the 38-year-old shared a photo of Flick's squad on his Instagram story alongside the words: "Campeones!!! Visca el Barça!!!"

For those yet to explore Catalan on Duolingo, that translates to: "Champions!!! Long live Barça!!!"

How Many Trophies Have Barcelona Won Since Lionel Messi Left?

Hansi Flick's Barcelona squad

The eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient amassed an impressive 34 major trophies during his time at Barcelona, among them 10 La Liga titles. Messi's Barça successfully defended their league crown on several occasions, and he departed in 2021 having guided the Blaugrana to four Champions League triumphs.

Champions League glory has remained out of reach for Barça since Messi's departure, with Flick's squad following up last season's heartbreaking semifinal exit with a quarterfinal elimination at the hands of city rivals Atlético Madrid this time around.

Nevertheless, that did little to dampen the celebrations across Catalonia on Sunday night. This marked their third La Liga title in the post-Messi era, with the first coming under the Argentine's former teammate Xavi Hernández back in 2023. Barcelona have also added a Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups to their trophy cabinet in that time.

Flick, who has indicated this role will be his final position in football management, won't rest until Barça are once again regarded as the best team in Europe. His squad are edging ever closer to that goal.
