Lionel Messi Dropped from 2025 MLS All-Star Game Squad in Shocking Roster Move

With only seven hours remaining before the 2025 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, Lionel Messi has been withdrawn from the final squad in a significant setback to excitement and anticipation.

Doubts regarding Messi's participation began emerging following concerns when he was absent from training session photographs and did not appear at the All-Star Skills Challenge event.

Messi was originally named in the initial squad announcement on June 25 along with Inter Miami colleague Jordi Alba. MLS published a revised roster on game day with both Messi and Alba omitted. A substantial disappointment considering the league's current MVP, and likely contender for this year's honor, will not compete for the league against opposing Liga MX.

Javier Mascherano voiced opposition to his two players participating in a friendly match considering their congested fixture schedule following the FIFA Club World Cup. A specific explanation for Messi and Alba's withdrawals has not yet been provided.

Messi and Alba may face suspension if they lack documented medical issues. Should the penalty be imposed, both could be absent for a crucial match against FC Cincinnati this weekend. Former LA Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimović received a suspension in 2018 after missing the exhibition match, a ruling he subsequently described as "absurd."

The 2025 MLS All-Star match begins at 7:30 p.m. ET with the Liga MX All-Stars facing the elite players from the division who have attended. The match is available to stream at no cost on Apple TV.

Sports Illustrated has contacted MLS seeking official statement.
