Borussia Dortmund center back Nico Schlotterbeck has moved to dismiss reports claiming he is on the verge of signing a contract extension with the Bundesliga side. While this doesn't necessarily signal an imminent departure, it does leave the door ajar for the likes of Liverpool or Real Madrid.
Schlotterbeck's existing deal has just one year remaining beyond this season, making it a pivotal period for the 26-year-old German international, who is regarded as an attractive target for several of Europe's elite clubs seeking defensive reinforcements.
Rumors circulated in Germany last week suggesting the defender was set to extend his stay at Dortmund—potentially on a four-year deal running through to 2031. However, Schlotterbeck used a national team press conference on Tuesday to clarify the situation.
"I'm glad you asked, because I read it in your news today. To be honest, I have to categorically deny it [is close]. Unfortunately, we haven't reached that point yet," the player stated bluntly.
The stalled negotiations appear to be linked to a recent shake-up in Dortmund's front office. Club icon Sebastian Kehl stepped down as sporting director this month, with Ole Book taking over the role.
"I had been in talks with Sebastian for quite some time. Sebastian is no longer here. Now Ole will be my main contact, along with Lars [Ricken, managing director of sport]. That's why I was looking forward to the question. But what you're saying [about the contract being close] isn't true at all.
"I've spoken with [Ole Book], but we haven't reached the point where a renewal is imminent. It's bad for BVB fans, but it's not an easy situation for me."
Opportunity for Liverpool, Real Madrid

Reading between the lines, it appears Schlotterbeck had been eager to finalize an extension before Kehl's exit. With negotiations now having taken a notable step back, this type of administrative stumble can sometimes be all it takes to swing the door open for a potential transfer.
Dortmund's grip on the situation has suddenly weakened, and a concrete offer from another club could test their determination to hold onto Schlotterbeck—who serves as vice-captain—particularly if his desire to remain begins to waver.
Should the defender become open to exploring options elsewhere, Dortmund's leverage is further undermined by the fact that Schlotterbeck could walk away on a free transfer in 2027.
His current estimated market value (per Transfermarkt) stands at $63.1 million. However, that figure is expected to decline once the summer transfer window opens.
Why Do Liverpool, Real Madrid Need a New Center Back?

Setting aside the ongoing contract uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konaté—though the Frenchman has hinted he will remain after publicly referring to next season at Liverpool using "we"—the Premier League club must begin planning for a future without Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch defender is fast approaching his 35th birthday. Although his contract extends to 2027, that offered little assurance in the case of Mohamed Salah, and the Reds must proactively identify candidates capable of filling his enormous void at the center of their backline.
Beyond Van Dijk and Konaté, Liverpool's defensive depth is alarmingly thin. Joe Gomez, whose availability has been a persistent concern, and 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni, currently sidelined with an ACL injury until next season, are the only other center backs at manager Arne Slot's disposal in the first-team squad.
Real Madrid's predicament is somewhat less urgent, though the need to replace aging defenders remains a pressing concern. David Alaba, who turns 34 in June, and Antonio Rüdiger, who recently turned 33, are both set to be out of contract within the next three months. Injuries have limited both players' availability throughout the season.
Éder Militão has endured two ACL tears in the past three years and is only now approaching full fitness after suffering a ruptured hamstring in December. Dean Huijsen, still shy of 21, has endured a turbulent debut campaign in Madrid, and questions persist over whether Raúl Asencio is suited to a long-term starting role.
