Liverpool Axe Arne Slot as Dismal 2025–26 Season Ends in Shock Dismissal

Liverpool have announced the exit of head coach Arne Slot following a disappointing campaign.

While it appeared Liverpool were willing to back the Dutchman despite a second-season slump that saw his team fall from Premier League title holders to fifth place, Saturday's reports were quickly followed by an official club statement confirming Slot's departure.

"That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying," a statement read. "The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and—most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves—successful.

"As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.

"From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, he embraces it. This was evident when he agreed to take over as head coach, when he guided us to the Premier League title and throughout the season just ended when he faced considerable challenges and burdens.

"At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but."

Liverpool Identify 'Clear Favorite' to Replace Slot

Andoni Iraola

The news of Slot's sacking drew frustration from a number of Liverpool supporters, not so much over the decision itself, but the timing surrounding it.

Xabi Alonso, who had been Liverpool's primary target in the summer of 2024 prior to Slot's appointment, spent the opening months of 2026 without a club after leaving Real Madrid. It was Chelsea who seized the opportunity, snapping up the former Reds midfielder on May 17.

Barely two weeks later, Liverpool are searching for a new manager of their own, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola is the "clear favorite" for the role.

Iraola had held talks with the likes of AC Milan and Crystal Palace in recent days, having just guided Bournemouth into the Europa League, but now looks poised to take charge at Liverpool, who finished a mere three points ahead of Iraola's Cherries in the most recent season.
