Liverpool have revived one of their most beloved kits of all time with the unveiling of their new 2026–27 home jersey.
The new strip draws its inspiration from the shirt worn between 1989 and 1991, a period during which Liverpool claimed their record-equalling 18th league championship in a striking red design widely regarded as one of the club's finest ever offerings.
That jersey's distinctive geometric pattern has been faithfully recreated on Liverpool's new home kit, which maintains its classic red base and white detailing.
Even the new goalkeeper shirt has received the same design treatment, with the white geometric pattern making a bold statement against a green base for Liverpool's shot-stoppers.
As one of adidas' Elite clubs, Liverpool have also launched a long-sleeve variant of the jersey alongside an extensive range of training and lifestyle apparel, covering everything from warm-up wear to jackets and headwear.
Liverpool Hoping to Draw On-Field Inspiration From History
The 1989–90 squad, guided by Sir Kenny Dalglish, is remembered not only as one of the most stylish sides in Liverpool's history, but also one of the greatest.
Powered by the goals of Ian Rush and John Barnes, and boasting household names such as Alan Hansen, Peter Beardsley and Bruce Grobbelaar, Liverpool stormed to the First Division title, suffering just five league defeats throughout the entire campaign. Few could have anticipated it would be the club's last championship until 2019–20.
That level of success has been conspicuously absent this season. Arne Slot's side, who came in as defending league champions, have already suffered 12 league defeats and have yet to secure their place in next season's Champions League.
Supporters will be keen to put this underwhelming campaign behind them, and the release of this new jersey is expected to generate a fresh wave of optimism, offering a younger generation the opportunity to connect with the iconic design from more than four decades ago—even if it lacks some of the retro charm of the original Candy-sponsored, Trefoil-adorned shirt.
Next season will mark the dawn of a new chapter for Liverpool, as the club prepares to say goodbye to iconic figures Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. The Reds will be hoping that dressing in the spirit of the 1989–90 side will inspire Arne Slot's squad to perform like their legendary predecessors, as they look to mount a Premier League title challenge at the earliest opportunity.
