Liverpool Dominate Bournemouth: Iraola Unleashes New Firepower in Stunning Victory

Alexander Isak's second-half goal made Andoni Iraola's homecoming to Bournemouth a triumphant one on Sunday, as Liverpool claimed a narrow 1–0 victory on the south coast.

The Reds were outplayed for much of the match until Isak broke the deadlock, but they managed the game composedly after taking the lead to record a third consecutive clean sheet. Liverpool hadn't achieved three straight league shutouts since the opening stretch of their title-winning 2024–25 season.

The hosts are no strangers to the growing pains that come with the early stages of Iraola's management, and the difficulties that have plagued the Reds so far were on display again at the Vitality Stadium. However, a surprisingly toothless Bournemouth failed to take advantage.

Marco Rose therefore heads into the international break still searching for his first Premier League win, while Liverpool, with room to grow, climb to sixth place.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

This was a particularly meaningful occasion for Liverpool boss Iraola, who made his return to the club he helped shape on Sunday afternoon.

Eager to ensure a smooth transition at Bournemouth following his hugely successful three-year tenure, Iraola held a two-hour meeting with incoming manager Marco Rose after the German's appointment was confirmed. The Cherries prioritized continuity, and that may well have worked in the visitors' favor on this occasion.

Liverpool were far from impressive, to say the least, but they knew exactly what they were walking into. Iraola had noted before kick-off that Rose had made few stylistic changes since taking charge, and acknowledged that his familiarity with his former club gave Liverpool an "advantage."

The away side showed moments of quality in and out of possession, and ultimately kept Bournemouth at bay. It was far from easy, and Iraola's men had to grind their way to three points, but hard-fought, determined victories can often be the most rewarding.

CB: Virgil van Dijk—7.7: Liverpool's defensive cornerstone radiated composure throughout and must have taken great pleasure in his partner's display, reassured that the Reds' backline is in capable hands going forward.

LB: Milos Kerkez—7.2: Had a few puzzling moments—par for the course with Milos Kerkez—but still built on a solid midweek outing against Tottenham Hotspur.

CM: Dominik Szoboszlai—6.8: Szoboszlai was handed a couple of promising set-piece chances in the first half but failed to make them count. Picked up a booking in the second half.

CM: Alexis Mac Allister—7.4: The Argentine was reliable enough in central midfield, though he was guilty of the occasional error that put his side under pressure. Positioned himself well to deal with Bournemouth's cutbacks.

RW: Cody Gakpo—7.6: Gakpo keeps finding ways to make an impact. He injected life into a fairly dull Liverpool performance with a superb run down the right to set up the only goal.

AM: Florian Wirtz—7.6: Got off to a very poor start and never quite found his footing. The game gradually passed him by before he was substituted.

LW: Bradley Barcola—6.6: The summer signing was largely anonymous on the south coast, with Barcola's impact minimal. Did offer some threat with a handful of incisive runs in behind the defense.

ST: Alexander Isak—7.6: Isak operated on the fringes before netting the winner, and played with renewed confidence thereafter. The Swede's trademark Tyneside swagger is gradually making its return.
