Liverpool Face Chelsea in a High-Stakes Clash: Bold Predictions, Key Lineups, and What to Expect

Liverpool and Chelsea have a long history of high-stakes encounters, but the upcoming clash between these two sides could rival some of the most memorable meetings in their rivalry.

Even the earlier meeting at Stamford Bridge delivered plenty of drama. Liverpool, still considered title contenders at the time, were caught off guard by a late Estêvão strike, with Chelsea appearing to be on an upward trajectory at that point.

Since then, however, the mood has darkened both on Merseyside and in west London.

Liverpool require just four points from their final three fixtures to secure a Champions League spot, yet supporters remain largely dissatisfied with the team's overall campaign. Arne Slot's squad have fallen well short of expectations, and the Dutchman's position at the club remains uncertain.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are enduring a historically dreadful spell. A 3–1 home loss to a heavily rotated Nottingham Forest side marked their sixth consecutive Premier League defeat, though they did at least end a nine-hour goal drought in the process.

That wretched run has left the Blues sitting ninth in the standings, with their hopes of Champions League football next season hanging by a thread.

Despite their recent struggles, Chelsea still have a slim chance of securing European football if they can find some form in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Sitting ninth and badly out of form, the Blues could still sneak into sixth place — enough to qualify given Aston Villa's anticipated Europa League victory. They trail that position by four points, making it a difficult but not impossible task, and the return of key defensive players should provide a boost.

Liverpool's well-documented defensive frailties have been exposed repeatedly this season. Regardless of Chelsea's poor form, this will be no easy afternoon for the fourth-placed hosts.

Prediction: Liverpool 1–1 Chelsea

Liverpool Predicted Lineup vs. Chelsea

Liverpool lineup

Slot had been optimistic about welcoming back several key players for Saturday's fixture, though it remains unclear whether Alexander Isak, Mohamed Salah, and Alisson will be fit to feature.

All three had yet to return to full training as of Thursday, and Ibrahima Konaté was also absent from Wednesday's session.

Salah is still expected to be fit before the season concludes after his hamstring issue, while Isak is reportedly dealing with only a minor groin problem. Should Alisson fail to recover in time, Freddie Woodman is set for his third Premier League start for the club, with Giorgi Mamardashvili still at least a week away from full fitness following his leg injury.

Wataru Endō, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitiké, and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs. Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Woodman; Gomez, Konaté, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Frimpong, Wirtz, Ngumoha; Gakpo.

McFarlane indicated that both Levi Colwill and Reece James could be in line to start at Anfield, with Colwill making his first appearance of the season in Monday's defeat. He played the second half against Forest, while James remained an unused substitute throughout.

Robert Sánchez and young Jesse Derry have both been ruled out after suffering concerning head injuries in the last match. Filip Jörgensen, who has recently returned from his own injury layoff, will take his place between the sticks.

Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho are both doubts after sitting out the Forest game with knocks. Neto appears the more likely of the two to start if both come through late fitness assessments.

Jamie Gittens and Estêvão are both out with hamstring problems.

Chelsea predicted lineup vs. Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Jörgensen; Gusto, Tosin, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Santos; Palmer, Fernández, Neto; João Pedro.
