Liverpool Launch Bold Pursuit of Xabi Alonso Despite Major Obstacles
Liverpool have reached out to representatives of Xabi Alonso to assess his availability for the managerial position, according to Spanish media reports.
The Spanish tactician was previously considered as Jürgen Klopp's successor when the German chose to depart following the 2023–24 campaign, but elected to stay with Bayer Leverkusen after guiding them to their maiden Bundesliga triumph in an undefeated season.
Liverpool then turned to secure Arne Slot from Feyenoord, who successfully delivered the Premier League championship in his debut season. Alonso, however, couldn't replicate his previous success against Bayern Munich for consecutive seasons, though his achievements were sufficient to persuade Real Madrid's leadership that he was the right candidate to succeed the veteran Carlo Ancelotti.
However, Alonso's homecoming to Spain turned into a complete catastrophe. Facing immediate pressure, Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing 4–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup, and Alonso rapidly lost control of a squad that openly displayed their dissatisfaction with his tactical choices. His tenure ended abruptly in mid-January following a Spanish Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona.
Just under two weeks following his dismissal, Spanish outlet AS reports that Liverpool have initiated discussions with Alonso's representatives, as they evaluate alternatives amid an underwhelming second campaign under Slot.

Alonso has previously expressed openness about a potential Liverpool comeback. During his five-year playing stint from 2004–09, he captured the Champions League and Super Cup in 2005, forging lasting relationships with the fanbase.
"Naturally there exists a connection with my previous club, but currently this is where I belong," Alonso stated in December, while still managing Real Madrid. "Looking ahead, anything could happen."
Those words proved prophetic as just over a month later, Alonso was dismissed by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez. While club officials claimed the parting was by mutual agreement, this narrative has been heavily challenged by media reports.
The AS report suggests Alonso's stance remains unchanged from his recent statements. Liverpool's inquiry has reportedly received a "favorable reception," reinforcing their confidence that quality alternatives exist should Slot's position become unsustainable.

The crucial question remains whether Liverpool will dismiss Slot. He secured an unforeseen Premier League trophy in his first year, when expectations suggested both manager and club would need adjustment time following Klopp's exit.
This success placed Liverpool in an unexpected position, accelerating their squad reconstruction timeline. They invested over £400 million ($538.9 million) in new talent, setting British transfer records twice with the acquisitions of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, making them heavy favorites to defend their title among experts, fans and observers.
However, Liverpool have struggled this campaign, unable to successfully blend their new acquisitions—with injuries being a significant factor—and bring them up to standard. They've also had to cope with the sudden, heartbreaking loss of striker Diogo Jota in July.
Currently, Liverpool have suffered 10 defeats in 34 matches across all tournaments, winning only half their games (17). They've already endured seven Premier League losses—Saturday's 3–2 setback against Bournemouth being their latest disappointment—which exceeds their entire previous season's tally by three.
Mounting pressure surrounds Slot, with fragmented displays and a concerning defensive record being the main issues, leading to speculation about his potential removal. Spanish sources indicate he may be given until season's conclusion, when a final decision regarding Alonso's pursuit will be made—he's unlikely to accept another position meanwhile and will probably take a break before returning to management.
