Liverpool Legend Drops Bombshell: "I've Been Forced to Consider My Future"

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has disclosed that he seriously contemplated departing the club during the summer transfer window following questions about his position as a regular starter.

Following what was arguably his most disappointing individual season in his distinguished Liverpool tenure, Robertson observed as the newly-minted Premier League winners invested £40 million ($54.9 million) to secure fellow fullback Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

While Robertson publicly maintained throughout the summer that he could still perform at elite level, speculation surfaced suggesting the defender was "interested" in a potential switch to unexpected admirers Atlético Madrid. Though no move came to fruition, the Scottish captain has acknowledged he did contemplate his Anfield future.

"This marked the first summer where I needed to evaluate my prospects," Robertson shared with media representatives during this week's international camp. "Previously, my situation and role were always certain. Therefore, I had to weigh my options.

"In the end, we determined that our loyalty remained with Liverpool. We made that commitment and it's a choice I stand by."

Robertson has begun all four of Liverpool's fixtures this campaign as a substitute. The veteran fullback was introduced for the closing thirty minutes against Bournemouth on opening day after Kerkez struggled in his inaugural home appearance, though he couldn't prevent Antoine Semenyo from netting twice for the away side. Manager Arne Slot has not granted the 31-year-old any additional playing time since.

"I'm accustomed to featuring in virtually every match," Robertson reflected. "Throughout my eight seasons at Liverpool—excluding the initial period—I've consistently been in the starting eleven. Clearly, in these early season fixtures, I've been relegated to the substitutes' bench. However, I had the summer to contemplate my desires.

"I reached a decision and remain confident that by maintaining my current approach, I'll feature prominently for both club and nation."
