Liverpool Match Suspended After Antoine Semenyo Faces Shocking Racist Abuse

Bournemouth's talented winger Antoine Semenyo experienced racial abuse during the opening period of the Cherries' season-starting match against Liverpool at Anfield.

The occurrence seemed to take place as the Ghana international was positioning himself for one of his characteristic long throw-ins. Semenyo moved close to the spectator area while preparing for his throw-in technique and appeared to react to someone in the crowd.

Semenyo quickly informed referee Anthony Taylor of the situation, leading to an immediate stoppage in play during the 29th minute, following Premier League procedures.

Taylor was observed discussing the matter with both Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola during the interruption, while Semenyo also had a conversation with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. NBC Sports commentator Jon Champion subsequently explained the incident to viewers and clarified the reason for the play stoppage.

Should a similar incident repeat itself, the match could be suspended for 15 minutes, as outlined in the protocol.

Play continued following a short delay, and Liverpool eventually scored first late in the opening half through Hugo Ekitiké.
