Liverpool's desperate quest to find a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah has hit another roadblock, with the club's surprise $68 million (£50 million) offer for Ismaïla Sarr promptly turned down by Crystal Palace.
The Reds have chased numerous transfer targets throughout the summer as they look to bolster their wide forward options. An early summer acquisition of Victor Muñoz has been accompanied by persistent links to Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola, along with reported interest in his PSG teammate Ibrahim Mbaye.
The latter is considered a credible heir to Salah due to his preference for the right wing, which partly explains two recent bids for Brighton & Hove Albion's Yankuba Minteh—both of which were turned down as the Seagulls hold out for $108.7 million (£80 million).
With the deadline fast approaching and viable options dwindling, Liverpool turned their attention to a familiar adversary in Sarr. The 28-year-old has netted seven times in 10 career appearances against them as a Watford and Palace player—four of those coming last season.
However, as reported by Fabrizio Romano and other sources, the Eagles have rejected Liverpool's opening offer and have no intention of parting with Sarr this summer. Two separate approaches from Galatasaray have similarly been dismissed.
Liverpool must now shift their focus elsewhere before the transfer window closes on Sept. 1.
Reds Scramble for Right Wing Options
Liverpool's pursuit of a new right winger is separate from any potential deal for Barcola. The Frenchman is far from certain to arrive at Anfield this summer, as PSG remain firm on their hefty asking price, though there is cautious optimism that an agreement could be reached.
Nevertheless, that would only address part of the problem for Andoni Iraola, who still lacks a natural like-for-like replacement for Salah.
In Liverpool's Premier League opener against Newcastle United, Rio Ngumoha and Victor Muñoz were deployed on the right side of the attack, yet both players are more comfortable on the left wing. The same is true of Cody Gakpo and potential signing Barcola.
So, where might Liverpool look next?
The club could reignite their interest in Mbaye. Although initially deterred by PSG's $81.6 million price tag, the Senegalese international's future remains unresolved, and Liverpool may feel compelled to meet the European champions' asking price as their urgency grows.
Lille attacker Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who is capable of operating across the front line, has also been mentioned as a potential target, though there is little concrete evidence to suggest a transfer is imminent.
Iraola would undoubtedly welcome a reunion with Bournemouth winger Rayan, but any such deal would demand a nine-figure investment from Liverpool. The Brazilian, who featured at the World Cup and has impressed on England's south coast, reportedly carries a $176.7 million (£130 million) release clause that activates in January 2027.

In Italy, Juventus winger Francisco Conceição has been loosely linked with a move to Merseyside, while Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo and RB Leipzig's Johan Bakayoko have reportedly attracted Liverpool's attention in previous windows.
20-year-old Porto winger William Gomes is another youthful name that has been mentioned, albeit without much concrete backing.
Regardless of who Liverpool ultimately bring in, their disorganized approach to securing a new winger leaves plenty of room for improvement.
