Liverpool Owners Set Sights on Major La Liga Acquisition

Fenway Sports Group, the ownership entity behind Liverpool, is reportedly considering Getafe as their next target for establishing a multi-club network.

FSG has been actively seeking opportunities to expand their football holdings beyond Liverpool for an extended period, though their previous pursuits of French club Bordeaux and Spanish team Málaga ultimately failed to materialize into concrete deals.

The Telegraph reports that FSG is currently investigating the potential acquisition of Getafe to enhance their football operations alongside Liverpool. Their ambition doesn't extend to matching Manchester City's scale, as City serves as the primary club within the City Football Group's empire of 12 teams across four continents.

However, Michael Edwards, FSG's football chief executive, is enthusiastic about expanding his responsibilities beyond Liverpool alone, and this broader scope was reportedly instrumental in his decision to rejoin the organization last summer.

Throughout the global football landscape, multi-club ownership models are gaining significant momentum.

Apart from the well-established Red Bull network, Chelsea's ownership group BlueCo completed their acquisition of French club Strasbourg in 2023, while Edu departed his position as Arsenal's sporting director with plans to join Evangelos Marinakis's portfolio, which encompasses Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave.

Getafe is situated near Madrid and has maintained its La Liga status for all but one season over the past 21 years. They experienced a brief relegation at the conclusion of the 2015–16 campaign but secured promotion back to the top division after just one season in the lower tier. Getafe concluded the 2024–25 La Liga season in 13th position, marking their fifth consecutive finish in the bottom half, though they achieved fifth place as recently as 2018–19 and have earned European competition spots on three occasions.

Despite the club's long-standing presence in La Liga, it may come as a surprise that Getafe didn't exist in its present form before 1983. The original Getafe club was dissolved following the 1981–82 season, and two other local teams—one of which began as a Real Madrid fan club—combined to create the current Getafe CF.
