Liverpool Set to Honor Diogo Jota with Retired Jersey Number

Liverpool will permanently retire Diogo Jota's former jersey number 20 across all team levels as a tribute to their late player who passed away on July 3.
Jota and his sibling, André Silva, lost their lives in an automobile accident in Spain. Liverpool sought approval from Jota's spouse, Rute, and his relatives before making this decision. This tribute acknowledges Jota's valuable contributions to Liverpool and the significant influence he had on teammates and supporters. The retirement applies to all divisions including the LFC women's squad and youth academy.
This marks the first time Liverpool has retired a player's jersey number.
"As an organization, we were deeply conscious of our supporters' feelings – and we shared those exact sentiments," stated Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, in the official announcement. "It was crucial for us to include Diogo's wife, Rute, and his family in this decision and to ensure they were informed first about our plans."
"For Liverpool Football Club, he will always remain our number 20."
