Liverpool Shatter Premier League History With Thrilling Derby Triumph

Liverpool became the first club in Premier League history to secure a win at 60 different grounds in the competition after recording their first-ever victory against Everton at the Toffees' new Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.

The Reds were forced to wait until deep into second-half stoppage time to claim derby bragging rights. Beto leveled Mohamed Salah's first-half opener to set up a nervy finish. Despite impressing for large stretches of the match, Everton appeared to fade in the dying moments.

The fourth official's board showing 11 minutes of added time was greeted with groans from home supporters content to settle for a 1–1 draw. Liverpool, however, continued to press and eventually bundled in the winner just as the clock struck 100 minutes.

It was a historic milestone for Liverpool but yet another tale of heartbreak for their Merseyside rivals. Virgil van Dijk's header was the sixth 90th-minute winner the Reds have scored against Everton since the Premier League era began in 1992—no club has ever scored more last-gasp goals against the same opponent in the competition's history, according to Opta.

Van Dijk himself is no stranger to breaking Everton hearts in the closing stages. The commanding centre-back announced his Liverpool arrival in January 2018 with a winning goal in the 84th minute against Everton in the FA Cup third round.

"You can make your debut against Everton—what if you score in that game?" Van Dijk recalled his friends asking him ahead of that Anfield debut. "I was like, 'It's not going to happen,'" he said. "Obviously then I did score and it was just something crazy. A better start I don't think you can get."

Liverpool's record of wins at 60 different Premier League venues stands alone but remains incomplete. The two-time champions of the competition have failed to win at two grounds during their continuous three-decade stay in the top flight: Blackpool's Bloomfield Road and Luton Town's Kenilworth Road.

The Reds made their one and only Premier League visit to Bloomfield Road in early 2011. Blackpool were still riding high on the momentum of their promotion and entered the fixture level on points with a Liverpool side in considerable turmoil. The club was in chaos following a change of ownership and had ended Roy Hodgson's troubled managerial reign just four days before the coastal trip.

Sir Kenny Dalglish, returning for a second spell following a storied playing and managerial legacy on Merseyside, suffered defeat on his comeback to Ian Holloway's spirited side. The Blackpool manager had once been refused an autograph by his footballing hero, yet walked away from their first professional encounter having thoroughly outfoxed him.

Luton Town were on the verge of a famous win when they hosted Liverpool in 2023 at Kenilworth Road, only to be denied by Luis Díaz in the 95th minute. The Colombian winger celebrated the dramatic equalizer with a deeply personal gesture, lifting his shirt to reveal a message reading "freedom for papa" during the week his father had been abducted. Díaz Sr. was freed four days after the match.
