Liverpool owed much to 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha's extraordinary, record-matching display as they secured their third consecutive Champions League win on Tuesday.
The Reds found themselves two goals down before the half-hour mark of their league phase clash against Villarreal at Anfield, yet Ngumoha's brilliance helped spark a comeback as they ultimately prevailed 4–3.
The youngster stood out as one of the few bright sparks in red during an unconvincing win and rightfully earned UEFA's official Player of the Match award for his outstanding display—which included assists for Ronald Araújo's equalizer and Alexis Mac Allister's second goal of the evening.
The explosive winger was a persistent menace to Villarreal's defense and joined an elite group of record-holders on the way to a crucial victory.
According to Opta, Ngumoha became only the fourth teenager in history to complete seven or more dribbles across multiple Champions League appearances since records were first tracked in 2003–04, equaling a feat previously achieved only by Lamine Yamal, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Arjen Robben.
Ngumoha had completed seven dribbles during Liverpool's thrilling 6–3 victory away at LASK the previous week and surpassed that figure against Villarreal, registering nine before being substituted in the 74th minute.
Opta's Michael Reid also noted that Ngumoha equaled a 28-year Liverpool record by becoming the club's youngest player to register two assists in a single game since Michael Owen back in 1998.
On top of that, Ngumoha also broke Owen's record as the youngest player to ever provide an assist for Liverpool in a European competition.
No player can surpass Ngumoha's average of 7.4 completed dribbles per 90 minutes in the Champions League this season, either.
'I'm Getting Better'—Ngumoha Opens Up on Role Change

Liverpool have long recognized that they possess one of world football's most gifted young talents, and Ngumoha appears to grow stronger with every game. However, after a breakthrough 2025–26 campaign, he has had to adjust to a new position this season.
Having previously been used exclusively on his favored left flank, Andoni Iraola has shifted Ngumoha to the right side to compensate for Liverpool's shortage of natural options in that area.
Unsurprisingly, Ngumoha has flourished despite his young age, and he is satisfied with the strides he has made since making the switch.
When asked about his positional adjustment following the Villarreal win, the England international said: "It's helping me a lot in training, the gaffer, all the coaching staff, all the players believe in me. Slowly and slowly I'm getting better on the right."
He continued: "It's up there with one of the best I've played, I think. I enjoyed myself out there. The team helped me as well a lot. I enjoyed today.
"Whenever I get the ball and there's an opportunity to go one-on-one or two-on-one sometimes, by all means I'll do it. I believe in myself to do it. The more chances we get, the more it makes the opposition worry. I just keep going and be ruthless."
