Liverpool Stars Crumble Under Pressure as Galatasaray Delivers Crushing Champions League Blow

Liverpool face a challenging task at Anfield next week to secure their place in the Champions League quarterfinals, after suffering a 1–0 defeat to Galatasaray in the opening leg of their round of 16 clash.

The Turkish side managed to replicate their result from the September league phase encounter, which was settled by a Victor Osimhen spot-kick. The prolific Nigerian forward didn't find the net this time, but he orchestrated the crucial moment that arrived within the first ten minutes.

Osimhen's header from Gabriel Sara's corner dropped perfectly for Mario Lemina, who converted from close quarters to provide Galatasaray with an ideal beginning.

The opening period was an end-to-end spectacle lacking control, with Liverpool finding it difficult to maintain sustained attacks in their quest to level the score. They dominated much of the second half and saw a goal disallowed due to an Ibrahima Konaté handball, but the away side will leave RAMS Park aware they fell short of securing a positive result.

Nevertheless, a single-goal disadvantage is far from catastrophic with the second leg at Merseyside still to come.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

One Thing We Can't Ignore

Florian Wirtz, Wilfried Singo

Liverpool fans celebrated when they spotted a starting eleven without Cody Gakpo, though there was no place for promising youngster Rio Ngumoha either. Instead, Arne Slot chose to deploy Florian Wirtz on the left flank, with the German having recently returned from a minor back problem.

Wirtz has hit his form in 2026, with his brilliant display as Liverpool's No. 10 in a 4–1 triumph over Newcastle United providing a preview of Anfield's future with their talented German linking defense and attack.

In an attempt to create balance during their autumn struggles, Slot positioned Wirtz on the left wing with mixed results, but his selection in that position was unexpected on Tuesday evening, and it failed to work. Without Milos Kerkez pushing forward, Wirtz appeared isolated against the physically dominant Wilfried Singo, who gave him no space in individual duels.

When you deploy Wirtz on the left wing, he must be allowed freedom to drift centrally and operate between the lines, with fullback Kerkez providing the width. Without this, the former Bayer Leverkusen talent has limited impact. Even when Wirtz began to play more centrally, which became apparent in the second half, poor understanding with Kerkez meant Liverpool failed to stretch Galatasaray's defensive line without a dependable source of width on one side.

Wirtz wasn't entirely absent from the match; he squandered two excellent opportunities either side of Mario Lemina's goal, but Slot's offensive setup created needless imbalance.

Giorgi Mamardashvili

*Ratings Provided by FotMob*

GK: Giorgi Mamardashvili—7.4: Failed to keep a clean sheet as the Alisson stand-in, but he prevented Liverpool's deficit from growing in the opening half, making two excellent saves. Dominant in aerial situations throughout.

RB: Joe Gomez—6.5: Performed adequately given the minimal defensive assistance from his teammate in front. Galatasaray's numerical advantage allowed Noa Lang to cut inside and deliver threatening crosses.

CB: Ibrahima Konaté—7.0: Avoided embarrassment thanks to the assistant referee's flag following a major error that enabled Osimhen to score. It was a frantic evening for Konaté, who failed to bring any stability to Liverpool's shaky defense.

CB: Virgil van Dijk—7.2: Galatasaray enjoyed considerable success, particularly in the first half, delivering crosses into Liverpool's penalty area, with Van Dijk unable to organize his teammates effectively.

LB: Milos Kerkez—6.6: Looked overwhelmed when in possession for most of the match, and his evening was destined to end prematurely after receiving a foolish yellow card in the first half. Must contribute more in attack.

DM: Ryan Gravenberch—6.8: Executed several elegant turns in midfield, but was frequently fouled cynically by the home team to stop any momentum building in advanced areas.

DM: Alexis Mac Allister—6.4: Another evening where the match seemed to bypass Mac Allister. Drew numerous fouls and wasted a promising opportunity early in the second half.

RW: Mohamed Salah—6.5: His substitution after an hour summarized everything. Salah was ineffective in Istanbul and repeatedly disrupted Liverpool's attacking flow.

AM: Dominik Szoboszlai—6.5: Even Szoboszlai couldn't rescue the Reds in Istanbul. The Hungarian was inconsistent with the ball, disrupting several promising counter-attacks.

LW: Florian Wirtz—6.8: Started for the first time since returning from a back injury, but Wirtz, after wasting two excellent early chances, was substituted, having failed to make an impact in a position that doesn't maximize his abilities.

ST: Hugo Ekitiké—7.2: Liverpool's most dangerous player on the evening, but the French striker should have found the equalizer midway through the second half when he capitalized on another Galatasaray mistake.

SUB: Jeremie Frimpong (60' for Salah)—6.0: An upgrade on Salah, but Frimpong didn't produce the intended impact. His decision-making was poor in attacking areas.

SUB: Andy Robertson (60' for Kerkez)—6.1: Committed an immediate error upon entering and never appeared fully settled during his 30 minutes on the field.

SUB: Cody Gakpo (73' for Wirtz)—6.1: Showed plenty of cutting inside without making decisive choices; typical Gakpo performance, really.

Subs not used: Freddie Woodman (GK), Kornel Misciur (GK), Curtis Jones, Trey Nyoni, Amara Nailo, Kieran Morrison, Rio Ngumoha.
