Liverpool Stars Shine Against Marseille as Dominant Display Lifts Weight Off Slot's Shoulders

Liverpool made significant progress toward securing direct qualification to the Champions League Round of 16 with a commanding away display against Marseille that delivered a crucial 3-0 triumph.

The Merseyside club secured their fifth European victory in seven league stage matches, climbing to fourth position and relieving mounting pressure on Arne Slot following four straight Premier League stalemates. They have secured their spot in the knockout rounds, having earned qualification to the playoff stage.

Hugo Ekitiké believed he had broken the deadlock at the Stade Vélodrome when he finished off a flowing Liverpool attack involving Mohamed Salah on his comeback, but video review showed the forward was marginally in an offside position. Dominik Szoboszlai would not be thwarted by VAR though, drilling an intelligent free-kick into the bottom corner during first-half injury time.

Liverpool sealed the victory in the second period when Jeremie Frimpong's effort forced Marseille keeper Gerónimo Rulli into an unfortunate own goal, before substitute Cody Gakpo put the finishing touches on the scoreline with the match's final touch.

RB: Jeremie Frimpong—7.3: Regularly featured in attacking areas as anticipated and was directly responsible for Liverpool's second goal following another rapid forward run.

CB: Joe Gomez—7.6: Gomez has struggled for consistency this campaign but delivered a reliable performance in place of Ibrahima Konaté. Displayed assurance and earned his clean sheet.

CB: Virgil van Dijk—7.4: Set the tone at the Stade Vélodrome with a commanding defensive showing that helped Liverpool neutralize a potent attacking force that had netted 22 goals in their last five matches.

LB: Milos Kerkez—7.4: There are indications that Kerkez is beginning to settle at Liverpool as he produced another positive display. Solid defensively while providing valuable attacking support.

DM: Ryan Gravenberch—8.3: Successful in protecting the defense and initiating Liverpool's forward moves. Earned the free-kick that led to Szoboszlai's goal, set up Gakpo's late strike, and made several crucial interventions.

DM: Alexis Mac Allister—7.5: Controlled the tempo from deeper areas and maintained Liverpool's rhythm under Marseille's pressure. More like his usual influential self.

AM: Dominik Szoboszlai—8.3: After setting up Ekitiké's disallowed goal, Szoboszlai put Liverpool in front with a clever and precise free-kick struck under the Marseille wall. Another outstanding and energetic performance from the midfielder, whose skillful touch helped create the third goal.

AM: Florian Wirtz—7.2: Could not extend his recent run of goal contributions during a relatively subdued evening by his high standards. Showed improvement after halftime but was somewhat sluggish in possession.

ST: Mohamed Salah—7.1: Showed flashes of his brilliance upon returning from Egypt international duty but was not heavily involved. Missed one excellent late opportunity.

ST: Hugo Ekitiké—7.4: Came extremely close to scoring only to be ruled out by VAR and then struck the woodwork on an unlucky evening for the French striker. A constant threat throughout as fortune abandoned him.

Marseille 0–3 Liverpool: How Events Unfolded at the Stade Vélodrome

Liverpool aimed to neutralize Ligue 1's highest-scoring attack during the opening period and successfully managed to limit their opponents. Marseille had registered no shots on target by the halfway point of the first half, while the Reds had already found the net. Ekitiké finished a rapid counter-attack from close range but was denied on home soil by a VAR offside decision.

Marseille eventually tested Alisson but the Brazilian was ready to parry Amine Gouiri's fierce cross-goal attempt. At the opposite end, the returning Salah nearly broke the deadlock, directing Frimpong's near-post cross just over the bar.

Liverpool concluded the first half on top and achieved their breakthrough through Szoboszlai's brilliance just before the interval. Having failed from the penalty spot at the weekend, the Hungarian made amends from a set-piece situation as he cleverly drove a free-kick under the Marseille wall and past Rulli.

Following lackluster offensive displays from both teams in the first half, the contest became much more open after the break. Ekitiké hit the post to add to his disappointment amid promising spells for Marseille where Alisson stopped Greenwood before Hamed Traoré blazed over following a swift counter.

Opportunities kept coming as Liverpool nearly doubled their lead, with Florian Wirtz testing Rulli's reflexes before Ekitiké sent his effort over the crossbar. However, the Reds finally increased their advantage at a crucial moment.

With less than 20 minutes left and Marseille becoming more adventurous going forward, a fortunate own goal settled any concerns in the visiting section. Another driving run from Frimpong saw the Dutch defender reach the goal line and his cross deflected off Rulli before trickling into the far corner.

Mohamed Salah wasted a golden chance to mark his team return with a goal as he inexplicably shot wide from close range, but Gakpo did give Liverpool their third as he converted a beautiful move in added time.
