Liverpool Strike Deal With PSG Over Bradley Barcola Transfer Fee

Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly reached an "agreement in principle" for the extraordinarily priced Bradley Barcola.

The French international has been at the center of one of the summer's biggest transfer storylines after rejecting a contract extension at PSG following France's fourth-place finish at the World Cup. Never willing to be outspent, the reigning European champions countered Liverpool's pursuit with a staggering asking price of $197.1 million (£145 million).

That figure would have made Barcola the priciest signing in Premier League history, eclipsing the record Liverpool set just last season when they managed to pry Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for $170 million (£125 million at the time of the deal).

The Reds had initially balked at PSG's demands, with both clubs appearing firmly dug into their respective positions over the past several weeks. However, The Athletic reports that a middle ground has been found. Liverpool are believed to have agreed to a total package of $163.1 million (£120 million), with $135.9 million (£100 million) guaranteed.

As the finer details are yet to be finalized between the two clubs, who are still awaiting signatures from both parties, the achievability of those add-ons remains unclear. Nonetheless, Barcola would still rank among the most expensive players ever purchased in the history of the game.

Despite not always being PSG's first-choice option, Barcola is set to carve out a notable place in football's financial record books. Should Liverpool pay his full fee, the 23-year-old would instantly become the fifth most expensive player in history.

Alongside his incoming teammate Isak, Barcola would find himself in the shadow of the seismic summer of 2017. Motivated by a Ligue 1 title drought, PSG permanently altered the transfer landscape with their jaw-dropping $263 million signing of Neymar Jr. from Barcelona — more than doubling the previous benchmark set by Paul Pogba's $117 million switch to Manchester United the year prior. That same window, PSG brought Kylian Mbappé in on loan from Monaco before completing his permanent transfer 12 months later in what became the second most expensive deal ever recorded.

To offset Neymar's departure, Barcelona turned to Ousmane Dembélé. The problem was that Borussia Dortmund were well aware of Barcelona's financial muscle and leveraged a deal potentially worth up to $175 million from the Spanish giants.

Within the Premier League alone, only Isak's total valuation exceeds Barcola's. Already this summer, both Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson have surpassed the $150 million mark, while Liverpool's other high-profile signing from last year, Florian Wirtz, also came with a hefty price tag.

While it remains premature to assess the English pair, Isak and Wirtz have so far struggled to justify their enormous fees. Liverpool's German midfielder has shown the most promise of the group, yet Isak's underwhelming tally of just four goals in an injury-hampered debut season at Anfield raises legitimate concerns for what lies ahead for Barcola. On the bright side, the expectations bar has been set relatively low.
