Liverpool Strikes Deal for Jarell Quansah Transfer with Crucial Protection Clause
Liverpool have reached an agreement to transfer defender Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, with the Merseyside club reportedly securing a buy-back option for the England defender.
Arne Slot's team set a new Premier League transfer benchmark when they acquired midfielder Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen during this transfer window, following their earlier capture of full-back Jeremie Frimpong from the same German club.
Negotiations between both clubs have persisted following Wirtz's transfer, though this time Liverpool find themselves in the selling position. Leverkusen identified Quansah as their top choice to fill the void left by Jonathan Tah's departure and acted swiftly to finalize the arrangement.
Latest reports indicate that Liverpool and Leverkusen have reached agreement on a transfer valued at £30 million ($40.4 million) upfront, plus an additional £5 million ($6.7 million) in add-ons.
Fabrizio Romano has also verified that Liverpool have maintained influence over Quansah's career by securing a buy-back provision, though the specific amount remains undisclosed.
The revenue generated from Quansah's departure will likely be channeled toward acquiring another central defender. Reports suggest Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi has emerged as a target, though the England international is believed to be hesitant about joining without assurances of consistent starting opportunities.
The 22-year-old Quansah accumulated less than 500 Premier League minutes across 13 appearances during the previous campaign. He earned only four league starts, including one on the season opener where he was substituted at halftime and faced public criticism from Slot.
Despite the duo eventually mending their working relationship, Quansah continued to serve primarily as cover for first-choice center-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, and Guéhi would presumably be unwilling to accept a comparable supporting role, especially with the World Cup approaching next summer.
