Liverpool Stun Fans With Shock $68 Million Move to Fill Mohamed Salah's Boots

Still hunting for a Mohamed Salah successor, Liverpool have reportedly had an opening offer for Brighton & Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh turned down.

Compared to their closest rivals, the Reds have had a subdued summer transfer window. They have only brought in Jérémy Jacquet—a deal arranged back in January, Víctor Muñoz and Ronald Araújo to Merseyside so far, with the 2026–27 Premier League season set to begin this weekend.

With time running short, the 20-time English champions have suddenly made their move for Minteh. The Athletic reports Liverpool lodged a $68.1 million (£50 million) offer for the 22-year-old, who is contracted to Brighton until 2029.

The Seagulls swatted away the bid, eager to retain their young winger after already losing Danny Welbeck to Chelsea this summer. The club is also bracing for the departure of Carlos Baleba, who is edging closer to a switch to Manchester United.

Why Liverpool's Minteh Bid Comes With Raised Eyebrows

Yankuba Minteh

On paper, Minteh shares a similar profile to Salah. The Gambian international is left-footed and causes the most damage from the right wing. He also possesses the pace and confidence to beat defenders, even if his final product can occasionally be inconsistent.

Minteh would undoubtedly offer the Reds a long-term solution on the right flank, but it would be a stretch to claim he'd instantly and smoothly plug the gap left by Salah. The forward managed just three goals and four assists across 36 appearances last season, a step back from his 12 goal contributions during his 2024–25 debut campaign at Brighton.

The greater worry, however, is his fitness. Minteh went under the knife after picking up a right leg injury during Brighton's 3–0 preseason victory over Roma on Aug. 8. The 22-year-old is anticipated to be out of action for two to three months.

So even if Liverpool manage to push through a deal for Minteh, the player cannot feature until October at the very earliest. Should his recovery take longer than expected, he could be looking at a November return.

For a side desperate to rebound from a disappointing 2025–26 campaign that concluded with a fifth-place Premier League finish, acquiring a winger who will miss the opening months of the season is far from ideal. But Liverpool are running low on both time and alternatives.

Liverpool Locked in Transfer Battle With PSG

Ibrahim Mbaye, Bradley Barcola

Liverpool have spent much of the post-World Cup period attempting to secure the services of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. The Frenchman reportedly chose not to extend his deal with the Parisians and is said to be eager for a move to Anfield.

Talks have been ongoing for some time between Liverpool and PSG, yet the two clubs have still not reached an agreement on a transfer fee for Barcola. The reigning French and European champions are holding firm at around $196.3 million (£145 million), while the Reds are reportedly unwilling to exceed $135.4 million (£100 million).

Barcola was an unused substitute in PSG's 2–1 UEFA Super Cup victory over Aston Villa, hinting that a transfer could be on the cards. Yet no agreement has been reached for his move to Liverpool.

The English club is also keeping tabs on PSG winger Ibrahim Mbaye, though recent reports indicate the asking price for the teenager is beyond what Liverpool are prepared to pay. Signing both Barcola and Mbaye could set the Reds back as much as $250 million.

The PSG duo are undoubtedly the most appealing winger options available for Andoni Iraola to bolster his squad, but the new manager may have to settle for the more attainable—and affordable—Minteh if circumstances force his hand.
