Liverpool Swoops In with Opening Bid for Hugo Ekitike Following Newcastle's Shocking U-Turn

Liverpool have reportedly submitted an offer for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitiké following Newcastle United's withdrawal from their chase of the French striker.

Ekitiké has been connected with transfers to Premier League elite clubs throughout the summer, but Newcastle appeared to gain an advantage with their approach earlier this week for a player who previously rejected two opportunities to join St James' Park in 2022.

In what seemed like a direct counter-move, Liverpool pursued their interest in Newcastle forward Alexander Isak, showing readiness to complete a transaction potentially valued at £130 million (€149.9 million, $174.3 million). The Merseyside club quickly indicated that should they fail to secure Isak, they would compete with Newcastle for Ekitiké's services.

Fabrizio Romano disclosed early Thursday that Liverpool were advancing in discussions regarding Ekitiké and subsequently confirmed that Newcastle had chosen to withdraw from pursuing the 23-year-old after their reported £70 million (€80.7 million, $93.9 million) offer was rejected.

A third development revealed Liverpool's initial proposal, which Frankfurt promptly declined.

Ekitiké carries a €100 million (£86.7 million, $116.2 million) price tag, with The Guardian suggesting this figure represents a release clause within his Frankfurt contract, as the German club has pledged not to sell unless their asking price is satisfied.

The coverage indicates that Ekitiké prefers joining Liverpool and has communicated this preference to interested clubs. Fabrice Hawkins reports that Liverpool and Ekitiké have already agreed terms on a six-year deal.

While Isak remained Liverpool's primary striker objective, Newcastle continues to firmly reject any approaches for the Swedish international, a position likely to strengthen after abandoning their Ekitiké pursuit.

Regarding Newcastle's next moves, The Athletic reports they will now target Brentford striker Yoane Wissa—a potential signing that could significantly affect Manchester United's current efforts to acquire Bees teammate Bryan Mbeumo.
