Liverpool Swoops to Snatch Highly-Rated Centre Back from Inter Milan's Grasp
Liverpool have completed the acquisition of 17-year-old central defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe from Austria Vienna, according to emerging reports.
The towering 6'5" defender has generated significant attention at youth level in Austria and featured in the squad that lost to Portugal in the Under-17 World Cup final last November, attracting interest from numerous scouts worldwide.
Inter Milan are understood to have shown considerable interest in Ndukwe, but as initially reported by Austrian publication Kurier, Liverpool have emerged victorious in securing the promising youngster's signature in what is being described as a "multi-million euro transaction."
Regional sources have indicated the transfer fee stands at an opening €3 million (£2.6 million, $3.5 million).
The development was subsequently confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who mentioned that Ndukwe had also turned down approaches from German clubs to finalize terms with Liverpool.
Although all arrangements are now in place, FIFA regulations prevent Ndukwe from relocating to England until reaching 18 years of age. With his birthday approaching in March, Ndukwe will only be allowed to join Anfield during the summer window.
Initially viewed as an academy acquisition, Liverpool remain optimistic that Ndukwe possesses the qualities necessary to progress to the first team in the coming years.
Liverpool Monitoring Senior Options Due to Ibrahima Konaté Contract Situation
The center-back position has presented challenges for Liverpool during recent transfer periods, with Virgil van Dijk approaching his 35th birthday this year and Ibrahima Konaté currently in the last six months of his deal.
Italian prospect Giovanni Leoni was brought in during the previous summer but unfortunately sustained a severe knee problem on his first appearance, while negotiations for Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi fell through at the final stage.
Liverpool continue pursuing at least one additional senior defender irrespective of whether Konaté extends his stay or departs as a free agent, with Club Brugge's Joel Ordóñez among those connected to a potential Anfield transfer.
Speculation has indicated that a substantial deal for Ordóñez has already been finalized, but according to Romano, this remains inaccurate.
Ordóñez has supporters within Anfield and has been monitored by the Reds, though he represents just one option on an extensive list of candidates that has yet to be narrowed down.
