Liverpool have unveiled the first look at a sculpture honoring the late Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, crafted from fan tributes through what has been described as a "unique recycling process."
Jota and Silva were tragically killed in a car crash on July 3, 2025, while traveling through Spain to board a ferry back to England for Liverpool's preseason training. Jota, a newly crowned Premier League champion who was 28 years old at the time, had recently undergone minor surgery and been advised by the club's medical team to refrain from flying.
The deaths of Liverpool's forward and his brother — himself a professional footballer for Portuguese second-division club Penafiel — prompted an enormous wave of emotion throughout the sport. Among the countless heartfelt tributes paid to a seemingly universally beloved figure, hundreds of physical mementos were left by supporters outside Liverpool's Anfield stadium.
Given the sheer volume of offerings — flowers, scarves, shirts, and various other keepsakes — Liverpool announced they would gather all of these items to create a lasting tribute to a player no one wished to forget.
Ten months after that devastating summer morning, the club unveiled the 'Forever 20' memorial.

Emerging from a granite-faced base containing remnants of those fan tributes is a flowing ribbon-like centerpiece. The fluid design forms the shape of a heart when viewed from the front, referencing Jota's signature goal celebration. It also takes the form of the numbers 20 and 30 from different angles, honoring the squad numbers worn by Jota and Silva respectively. A video game controller sits alongside the design, acknowledging Jota's well-known love of gaming — an interest that also inspired one of his popular goal celebrations.
The words of Jota's beloved chant are inscribed into the folds of the sculpture, which will be positioned on 97 Avenue, right next to the stadium where so many of those original tributes were placed.

Beyond the physical boundaries of steel and stone, Jota's legacy will endure forever in the hearts and minds of Liverpool supporters. This is a club that does not forget the many tragedies that have so cruelly touched it over the years.
The placement of this memorial on a street renamed in memory of the 97 lives lost in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster speaks to Liverpool's deep commitment to honoring those taken too soon.
The chant inscribed on the statue has been sung by Liverpool fans in the 20th minute of every match this season, a tradition that shows no signs of fading. The memory of Liverpool's No. 20 remains just as strong.
"We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go. Maybe especially in difficult moments," Liverpool manager Arne Slot said movingly last summer. "But in any moment we are here, we will carry him with us in our thoughts and in our hearts."
