LONDON — Liverpool had Alexander Isak, Víctor Muñoz and, above all, Brentford's Yehor Yarmoliuk to thank for a 2–1 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.
Andoni Iraola's side were justifiably behind 1–0 before Yarmoliuk lost his composure right on the stroke of halftime, delivering the faintest of headbutts that would have a far greater impact on the match than its intended target, Jérémy Jacquet.
Liverpool deserve credit for navigating the disjointed contest Brentford had attempted to engineer at the start of the second half, netting twice within eight minutes to claim three vital points and become the first team since Feb. 21, 2026 to defeat the Bees on home soil.
Vitaly Janelt would earn Brentford's second red card of the evening with just minutes left on the clock, but the real harm had already been inflicted by the match's first dismissal.
The Moment That Defined the Match

A wave of disbelief swept around the Gtech when the big screen lit up to indicate a VAR review for a potential red card was underway right at the death of first-half stoppage time. Much of the crowd's murmuring centered on which team, let alone which player, was in danger of being sent off.
As the replays (which were not shown to supporters inside the stadium) would confirm, Brentford's Yarmoliuk had been drawn into a senseless brush of his forehead against Jacquet while preparing to defend a corner.
Just minutes prior, VAR had correctly overturned a Liverpool penalty appeal, but the hand of fate at Stockley Park seldom favors the same side twice. This remote intervention followed a first half that Brentford had largely controlled, restricting their opponents to one clear opening which Bradley Barcola squandered before converting the sole genuine chance they themselves created.
The halftime changes set the tone for the second period. While Keith Andrews bolstered his defensive line before introducing the rapid Kevin Schade as a counter-attacking outlet, Iraola went on the offensive. Víctor Muñoz, Liverpool's right winger, came on for Ronald Araújo, a natural center back, in a very liberal interpretation of the right back position. Fittingly, it would be Muñoz who leveled for the visitors shortly after the hour mark.
Brentford's aggressive shape had kept Liverpool pinned back in the first half, allowing the hosts to accumulate more shots on target and touches in the opposition box than their high-profile visitors. Yet, reduced to ten men, the Bees were either trapped inside their own penalty area or left vulnerable whenever they ventured forward.
Muñoz's blistering pace exploited this disarray while Isak benefited from the game tilting toward Kelleher's goal. The sheer number of red shirts ensured that Barcola's header had a reasonable chance of finding a teammate. Isak was quickest to react, taking a deft touch before sweeping the ball into the far corner.
After watching their ten men fall apart, Brentford supporters could hardly be faulted for chanting: "To the referee, 2–1."
Liverpool Player Ratings vs. Brentford (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Alisson—7.0: Beaten by Keane Lewis-Potter's clever long-range header but otherwise rarely tested.
RB: Ronald Araújo—6.1: Operated on the periphery of the game before being withdrawn in favor of a more attacking approach from the visitors in the second half.
CB: Jérémy Jacquet—7.9: It's difficult to describe the composed Frenchman as anything less than elegant; whether striding forward with the ball, threading passes over bewildered red and white shirts, or getting a toe to any loose delivery. Jacquet even managed to hold his own against Igor Thiago without breaking a sweat.
CB: Virgil van Dijk—8.0: Called into action more frequently than he might have preferred but handled the unglamorous side of the game effectively.
LB: Milos Kerkez—7.7: Appeared to thrive from having his compatriot Dominik Szoboszlai in close proximity, continually adjusting his positioning while receiving a stream of instructions. Kerkez looked slightly less assured after his fellow Hungarian's forced departure.
CM: Dominik Szoboszlai—6.6: Uncharacteristically disciplined in his defensive duties during his brief time on the pitch.
CM: Alexis Mac Allister—8.4: It was his careless pass that allowed Brentford to keep Liverpool pinned back before Keane Lewis-Potter nodded in the opener.
RW: Víctor Muñoz—8.1: Repeatedly drove directly at Lewis-Potter rather than looking to go around or in behind him. Both players would get on the scoresheet, though Muñoz could claim the upper hand in their individual battle after twisting past the Brentford fullback before firing in a well-taken finish.
AM: Florian Wirtz—8.7: Drifted laterally across the final third in search of pockets of space without much joy in the first half, before capitalizing on the gaps that opened up within Brentford's depleted defensive structure.
LW: Bradley Barcola—8.4: Theoretically lifted by his hat trick against LASK in midweek, Barcola's cutting edge had abandoned him three days on, wasting a string of clear-cut opportunities against ten men.
ST: Alexander Isak—7.6: Almost entirely isolated from the rest of Liverpool's team; Isak might as well have been running drills on his own while the ball bypassed him repeatedly. Yet, it took just one moment of connection for the striker to make his mark, doing brilliantly to spin and fire Liverpool into the lead.
SUB: Trey Nyoni (32' for Szoboszlai)—6.9: Caught out by Lewis-Potter's run in behind him for the match's opening goal.
SUB: Jeremie Frimpong (46' for Araújo)—N/A: Lasted fewer than seven minutes before joining Szoboszlai on the treatment table.
SUB: Rio Ngumoha (52' for Frimpong)—7.0
SUB: Joe Gomes (79' for Muñoz)—6.6
SUB: Lewis Koumas (79' for Isak)—5.8
Subs not used: Giorgi Mamardashvili (GK), Kostas Tsimikas, Wataru Endo, Cody Gakpo.
