Liverpool's Champions League Dream Teeters on the Brink After Brutal PSG Showdown

Liverpool's Champions League Dream Teeters on the Brink After Brutal PSG Showdown

Liverpool face a steep uphill battle to stay alive in the Champions League after suffering a 2–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday's first leg encounter.

Arne Slot's side arrived at Parc des Princes as heavy underdogs given their contrasting league form and fell behind early to a deflected strike from dynamic PSG winger Désiré Doué.

Liverpool weren't terrible, but were largely suffocated by a superior opponent and offered very little going forward. PSG could have put the tie to bed before halftime, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Doué both denied by outstanding stops from Giorgi Mamardashvili before the break.

The Reds managed their first attempt shortly after the restart through Hugo Ekitiké, though it posed no threat to Matvey Safonov. They were fortunate to escape when Ousmane Dembélé blazed over from a prime position, but there was no such luck when Kvaratskhelia struck.

It was a goal of exceptional quality, brilliantly crafted by João Neves and coolly dispatched by the Georgian, who maintained his composure under pressure amid a packed penalty area.

A penalty awarded against Ibrahima Konaté was reversed by VAR, much to Liverpool's relief, before Mamardashvili produced another key save to deny Achraf Hakimi, and Dembélé rattled the woodwork.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

Arne Slot

Arne Slot overhauled his tactical setup in an attempt to paper over the cracks that have troubled Liverpool throughout the season, deploying a compact defensive block on the edge of the box to stifle PSG and reduce the space available to the reigning European champions. There was little intent to press high, with the focus instead on soaking up pressure and hitting on the break.

Fullbacks Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez operated on either side of a back three, with Joe Gomez slotting in alongside the regular pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.

The problem was, if the plan was to keep Liverpool competitive heading into next week's second leg at Anfield, it was undone almost immediately by the early concession.

The defensive-minded setup left Hugo Ekitiké cut off from support, with Dominik Szoboszlai working hard but unsuccessfully to provide a link. Florian Wirtz barely featured.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs. PSG (3-4-1-2)

Giorgi Mamardashvili challenges for the ball

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Giorgi Mamardashvili—6.4: Starting for the third consecutive match in place of Alisson. Made several saves and gave his best effort.

CB: Ibrahima Konaté—6.6: Got turned too easily by Doué down PSG's left flank in the buildup to the opening goal. His attempt to win the ball in that area, outside his usual role, was likely a consequence of the new system. A penalty given against him was later overturned as a clean tackle.

CB: Virgil van Dijk—6.0: His public frustration with teammates has been evident in recent days, and an early exchange where he appeared to berate Gravenberch suggested communication issues within the squad.

CB: Joe Gomez—6.2: Featured for an hour against Man City before playing the full 90 minutes here. Thrown into a difficult situation.

RM: Jeremie Frimpong—5.5: Liverpool's most threatening outlet in the early stages thanks to his pace down the flank, but he looked exposed defensively without adequate cover behind him.

CM: Ryan Gravenberch—6.6: Unfortunate that the opening goal deflected off him. That said, the lazy leg he hung out was a poor attempt to block the shot.

CM: Alexis Mac Allister—6.0: Booked in the first half for a foul on Doué when he was well off the pace. It summed up how far removed he was from the action throughout the evening.

LM: Milos Kerkez—6.8: Had a more comfortable defensive shift than Frimpong, coming out on top in 80% of his ground duels.

AM: Dominik Szoboszlai—6.4: Worked tirelessly across the pitch in an attempt to get Liverpool moving. Gave the ball away a little too often.

ST: Florian Wirtz—6.7: Had an effort blocked late in the second half but was largely peripheral throughout.

ST: Hugo Ekitiké—6.1: His only shot went high and wide. Received little quality service and also struggled to hold the ball up when it did arrive.

SUB: Andrew Robertson (78' for Kerkez)—6.1

SUB: Alexander Isak (78' for Wirtz)—5.8

SUB: Curtis Jones (78' for Szoboszlai)—6.3

SUB: Cody Gakpo (78' for Ekitiké)—5.9

SUB: Trey Nyoni (90' for Frimpong)—N/A

Subs not used: Freddie Woodman (GK), Kornell Misciur, Federico Chiesa, Mohamed Salah, Rio Ngumoha.
